Shigeru Miyamoto chatted with ONM and hinted that we could see some kind of sequel to their not-such-a-hit rhythm title Wii Music, even though many didn’t consider it a success, or live up to the expectations Nintendo wanted for the game.
“I think it sold lower than our expectations but on the other hand it was a really unique game, I have to say,” Miyamoto told the magazine. “And also, even today, we are receiving several different offers from people in the field of music education, so as far as Wii Music is concerned, I think it still has great potential. And in the future there might be some developments. We may want to think about the possibility of making some improvements, based upon the original Wii Music.”
So does this mean Mr. Miyamoto and Nintendo had already greenlit a new Wii Music? Well, kind of, but he can’t speak about it. “Unfortunately we don’t have any news we can talk about at the moment,” said the legendary game designer. “But like Wii Fit Plus, it’s not really a sequel to the original Wii Fit – but we have added some features to improve the overall experience. It’s a kind of an enhanced version of the original Wii Fit…”
When Wii Music was first revealed to the world at E3 2008, it might have been and still could be, the worst surprise/announcement the company has ever revealed during the famous expo. I remember sitting in the Kodak Theater in Los Angeles along with other members of the press, trying to figure out why Nintendo thought this was going to be a blockbuster title. When we finally got to play the game, I use the word game loosely because a “game” needs rules and this title didn’t, I thought it was actually more horrible than I could have imagined. Instead of playing an awesome Journey song like in Rock Band 2, which I played minutes before Wii Music, I was mimicking playing a flute with the Wiimote, and ‘jamming’ to “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star.”

London’s Channel 4 news program had a story featuring our favorite video game icon — Shigeru Miyamoto. The broadcast was very positive and even compared the legend to the likes of Steven Spielberg.
The news program looks like they were invited to play Wii Music with Miyamoto. Instead it mostly ended up being about how video games can continue to survive in the current financial crisis.
The journalist questioned if it was smart idea for Nintendo to release another ‘expensive’ game to the market during a time which it isn’t stable. Miyamoto replied, “We need to eat in order to live, that’s our first priority. But entertainment and the enrichment of our souls must come in second place.” He added, “Nintendo’s mission is to take advantage of improving cheaper technology — to create reasonable and affordable entertainment. It’s very good value.”
Mr.Miyamoto went onto say about how he dislikes the recent trend in violent video games and feels developers are just trying to use violence as an excuse to sell more copies. He said, “I am concerned that many developers focus just on excessive violence in order to stimulate people’s minds.”
The last thing that was mentioned in the news broadcast, was about how Miyamoto is always thinking and planning on the future of gaming industry. And how one day maybe we won’t be using our hands to control the game — but our minds instead. Is this a sign for things to come?

Wii Music is one day until it’s released and since when it was announced at the pathetic Nintendo press briefing at E3, it hadn’t generated the buzz Nintendo hoped for. If you have visited /gamer the past few month, you’ll know I’m not the biggest fan of the concept. I believe it’s more of a toy as opposed to an actual game and therefore I’ve been very vocal about my dislike for it. But I won’t get into that.
But today, we bring you the reviews of what other people/sites think and so far it’s mixed. A few thought it was great, well many others thought it was well…not so good.
After the jump, check out reviews for the game. (more…)

Is this a sign for things to come here in the ‘States’ starting this Tuesday? Nintendo’s rhythm ‘game’ Wii Music, is about to be released to US Wii owners, but in Japan it didn’t do so well. Although, the music-based game didn’t sell terrible but it’s defiantly not a hit either. While it did move 50,000 copies on the first day, which sounds great — it certainly doesn’t compare to Wii Fit, which sold 254,000 copies in two days. Or even Super Smash Bros. Brawl which was rumored to sell 500,000 copies in one day.
We just wonder if Americans are going to gobble up the Music ‘game’, but not only is the game starting to get average reviews (yes, some are good), the marketing has been awful. So in the end, we think it’ll be about the same — percentage wise. Below are the numbers of the popular Wii games sold in Japan in the first few days.
Super Mario Galaxy: 130,000 on day one (rumored)
Super Smash Bros. Brawl: 500,000 on day one (rumored)
Wii Fit: 254,000 in first two days
Mario Kart Wii: 594,000 in first four days
Wii Sports: 176,167 in first two days
Wii Play: 175,297 in first two days
The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess: 139,011 in first two days
Wario: Smooth Moves: 63,954 in first two days

“With this goal in mind we created Wii Music, which is not quite a game and not quite an instrument, I hope that as people play, they will truly understand the joy of performing and develop a greater passion for music”

IGN has released a video of the editors playing Nintendo’s rhythm game, Wii Music. The song of choice they tried to play was one of the most well known theme songs in gaming history — Zelda. But you wouldn’t know if we didn’t tell you because it sounds just god-awful.
I know I have received a lot of crap from Nintendo Fanboys about my dislike for Wii Music, but how can you stick up for game like this after watching the video above. I’m sure if I purchase the game or play it at all, I’ll enjoy it for about 15 minutes. But after that…I’m not sure how my feelings will be towards the game.

Nintendo’s biggest game that comes out this year, Wii Music is officially scheduled to come out on October 20, 2008. Although the word ‘game’ is used loosely. In fact we have a HUGE issue calling it a game.
You see, we feel anything that uses the word game should have a set of rules and the player(s) must follow them better than the other competitor(s) to insure victory. Wii Music doesn’t include that philosophy in anyway. When some Nintendo Fanboys get upset when gamers call it a toy, we think they need to come down because when you think about it, it really is. Here is the definition of the word toy:
1.)An object for children to play with.
2.)Something of little importance; a trifle.
3.)An amusement; a pastime: thought of the business as a toy.
Honestly, when you look at the definition, does Wii Music follow that more, because we believe it does. But to call it a game in our opinion makes the industry we love look VERY immature.
As a matter of fact, we’re not even saying that we’re not going to play it, nor do we think we’ll have a terrible time when we do. We’re just not sure what kind of reply value the music simulator will have. How many times can I play ‘Twinkle Twinkle Little Star‘ with no reason besides to kill time?
Oh and another thing, check out the video above. Nintendo has just released another trailer for the ‘toy,’ and the girl this time is ‘playing’ a harmonica. For gods sakes, does it even sound close to the instrument?

Nintendo is holding a press briefing on October 2, 2008. It’s certainly not a coincidence by any means that the Tokyo Game Show will be held one week later. Traditionally Nintendo doesn’t participate in Japan’s largest trade show for video games. Obviously even though Nintendo isn’t going to be making any announcements during TGS — they certainly don’t want to be forgotten during the week.
Their exclusive press conference is set to deliver ‘new products,’ but were not to sure what they mean by that. Whatever it is, we’re hoping they can do something with Wii Music and actually make it a ‘game’ with rules.
We’ll bring you more when it develops.

Thank you Nintendo for proving me wrong. I thought there was no way in hell you could out due the most pointless instrument in the history of anything. A few days ago we showed you a video for Wii Music that had a ‘dog instrument.’ The Big N went even further than that, they now have a ‘cheerleader‘ instrument. You move the Wiimote so the a girl screams go, cool, and other pointless sounds. Not only is it incredibly stupid, it sounds like complete sh*t.
At the rate their going, I’m praying they have a sound for babies dying…

After the debacle that was the dog instrument in WIi Music, Nintendo has decided to take charge of their music game and put more cow bell in it…literally. That’s right, when you play ‘Twinkle Twinkle Little Star‘ or ‘Yankees Doodle,’ you can now add the much needed “ding ding ding” noise to the song. Something I think everyone would agree that was missing in the original versions.
Watch the video up top.

When I was sitting through the Nintendo press conference at E3, like everyone else I couldn’t wait to see what surprises they had in store for us. To our avail what they showed us was kind of…well crappy. Not that we think the ‘game’ is completely awful, we just wait once a year for E3, and this is what we got.
When Miyamoto came on stage during the media briefing and was playing the saxophone with the Wiimote, I just stared in amazement. Not that I thought it was the most incredible thing, but more like WTF is Nintendo doing? After a few minutes of watching them play Wiimusic, I busted out in laughter and thinking ‘Is this for real?’
After watching the new trailer above, I had the same blank stare, and then started to laugh. Can some please explain to me why there is a dog instrument.

Collegehumor has a great video with two reporters going into Nintendo’s holiday line up party in New York City. While a Nintendo rep was trying to explain the premise for Wario and Wii Music, there was the other “reporter,” making fun of Nintendo and acting very odd- almost reminded me of Jackass on MTV. Pretty awesome stuff, enjoy.

Amazon.com is listing the Nintendo’s Wii Music for a price of $49.99 and will be released on November 3, 2008. Wii Music is Nintendo’s newest rhythm game, that will have no point system, and no way to win. It’s purely a pick up and play music “game,” designed to play with friends and not have to worry about who did the best. Some call it the “ultimate casual” game for non-gamers.
With your non-gamer friends, you too can play hit songs such as Yankee doodle, Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, and the Super Mario Bros. Theme.
WTF was Nintendo thinking? Oh yea, money, they want more money…

On our way to our seats at the Kodak Theater, we looked around, and saw pictures of all the Hollywood stars claiming their awards, from the Oscars. It was exciting to know we were going to see another type of art, and our favorite kind – video games. We were also going to see, arguably the grandfather of such art, Nintendo
In March of 2008 Reggie Fils-Aime said the the exciting news about post-E3 would be “maximizing all of our key franchises…”. Rumors quickly spread, from a brand new Zelda game to the return of the old classics like Ice Climber, and Punch-Out out. “What could it be”-we wondered? (more…)
