During the annual Gamestop manager’s meeting in Las Vegas, Nintendo’s Reggie Fils-Aime made a surprise appearance to announce some plans for his company. One of the bigger things revealed at the meeting was information on Wii Fit Plus. The president of the company confirmed the ‘expansion’ of Wii Fit is expected to arrive on stores shelves on October 4, 2009.
When the game debuts in stores, customers who don’t own a Wii Balance Board can pick up the original game with the board, along with the expansion pack for $99. Of course millions of people already own Wii Fit and if you’re one of them, on the same day you can pick up Wii Fit Plus for only $20.
While it doesn’t seem like a bad deal and it certainly isn’t, this just makes me wonder why Nintendo still doesn’t believe in downloadable content. Wii Fit Plus just reminds me of some DLC which includes some extra games. If Nintendo decided to have some sort of online service that allowed this, along with some storage device from the beginning, they could have been saving a decent amount of money. The company wouldn’t have to box and ship a retail version or at the very least, as many units.
Seriously, how many hardcore fans who bought Mario or Zelda also would have purchased extra DLC for Nintendo’s beloved franchises. I know the company is doing just fine and sitting on top of the world because of hardware sales for both the Wii and Nintendo DS. But how much more cash could they have generated if they simply implemented some sort online business structure like PSN and Xbox Live? When are they going to realize that online gaming isn’t the future but already a reality? I don’t know what else to say, but it’s amazing to see a company envision and create a new way we play games and they couldn’t include something as obvious as an easy to use online service.

Last year, one of the top Internet videos was the famous “why every guy should buy their girlfriend Wii Fit.” You remember the video, it’s the one that featured a girl wearing a t-shirt and panties, while playing the exercise game. To many gamers, it was a ‘hot video.’
However, ecmazza in youtube has created a similar video, but this girl could be hotter. *Wink*
Oh, and make sure you get to the end of the clip, that has to be the best part!
Check it out up top.

I always found the April Fools, for the most part, kind of lame. Although on occasion, a clever joke comes around. If you still play your Wii Fit, you might have already seen this joke when boot up the game. As you can tell from the picture above, the game was programmed to cause a little mischief on this exact day.
Considering how many ‘women’ who have purchased the weight loss game; it would have been a funnier gag if the game said you gained 10 pounds. Have you ever told a girl that they looked like they put on a few pounds? No? I wouldn’t recommend it, either!

San Diego Padres relief pitcher Heath Bell, is crediting Wii Fit for his weight loss this past offseason. According to the pitcher, he lost about 25 pounds because Nintendo’s game gave him the motivation to do so. He talked about his offseason workout with the Canadian Press;
“It said I was obese,” Bell said. “If you’re obese, it makes (your character on screen) obese. I was disappointed that I was that big. I literally took the game to heart. I did the work but I kind of credit the Wii Fit.”
First, it sounds like Bell was simply went on the board, and when the game told him that he was obese, he decided to take some kind of action. It doesn’t sound like the mini-games included with Wii Fit actually was the factor for him to shed the pounds, but the initial shock of the words ‘obese’ on the TV screen did. From there, I’m assuming Bell had a real workout regimen — with a real life trainer and all.
Now, if the people of San Diego are wondering why their Padres were in last place last year — look no further than this article. If a professional athlete needs a video game to tell him that he is overweight, thats not a good sign.

Nintendo has tapped into a market that some thought was impossible — women. If you haven’t noticed, almost every commercial that Nintendo airs on TV includes a woman on the screen. They understand that a lot of their success has to do with that gender.
Now, gaming retail giant, GameStop is trying to entice woman to buy one of the many ‘fitness’ games for the Wii in one of their retail stores. According to a press release, if someone buys one of the 40 “fitness-oriented titles,” they automatically qualify for a 12-month free subscription to either Cosmopolitan, Marie Claire, Redbook, Good Housekeeping, or O Magazine.
Vice President of marketing Mike Hogan made a statement regarding their new ploy:
We know that getting in shape is one of the toughest New Year’s resolutions to stick with, especially for busy moms who often don’t have time to spare for exercise. Today’s moms are looking for ways to incorporate exercise into their lifestyle. Active video games are a terrific way to reach your fitness goals, and as an added bonus, they can be enjoyed with your whole family.
It seems kind of far fetched that women will even know this promotion is going on at their local GameStop. In fact, I’m not even sure if these women even know GameStop exists.

Okay, I take back everything I’ve ever said about Wii Fit being for mostly women because this video is as Manly as it gets. The group Wicked Celtics have put together a music video and song featuring what apparently is manliest game of all time, which is Nintendo’s exercise game.
I do WANT to be hardcore and I will get on board! Watch the video above but be careful; your testosterone is going to boil!
On a side not: Am I the only one who finds the Shia LaBeouf reference hilarious? Don’t ask me why, I just do.

When people argue with me because I feel Nintendo is starting to drop their hardcore fan-base, I just don’t understand how they can’t see it. Next time someone tells me I’m wrong, I’m just going to bring this up.
A reader over at Kotaku took a snapshot of the women’s clothing department in Walmart. Now, he wasn’t just taking photos of the women’s underwear and bra’s, but actually getting something news worthy for us video gamers.
Apparently, some of the stores have actually included a Wii Fit kiosk in the section and I’m pretty sure Nintendo had something to do with this. When you enter a retail store and see a kiosk or an end cap, the manufacture of the product that is being showed off is bought by that particular company. Meaning Nintendo thought the idea of a Wii in the women’s clothing area is a perfect fit.
With the combination of this and the consist ads with woman promoting their products, Nintendo is putting more of their efforts with them, than us hardcore gamers. But whose to argue with Nintendo’s marketing as of late — it’s certainly working.

Entertainment Weekly’s newest issue features their annual “Best & Worst of 2008” awards. It’s the issue were they rank their favorite and not so favorite movies, TV shows, books and so on.
In the same issue, the publication actually has a section devoted to video games. Of course, the section is one of the last pages in the magazine, but hey; at least they mentioned it, right?
Now, you might be wondering what did they choose for best game of the year and we’ll tell ya– but we want to full warn you; you might be disappointed.
If you thought the VGA’s pick of Grand Theft Auto IV was a bad decision, than I’m guessing you’re going to hate this. Are you ready? Ok — they picked Wii Fit as the best of the best of 2008. Not LittleBigPlanet, GTA or even Left 4 Dead (that didn’t even make the list). Oddly enough, the iPod Touch was ranked at number 10 — last time I check, that isn’t even a video game

We like to note that they fail to honor such great games that were released this year like; Gears of War 2, Prince of Persia, Metal Gear Solid 4, World of Goo, Left 4 Dead, Fable II, Fallout 3, Resistance 2 and many others. But for some reason, they thought Madden: All Play for the Wii was superior than those mentioned above.
EW also mentioned the “Top 3 Worst Games of 2008.” Number one was Saints Row 2, which actually had higher reviews than their top choice. Number two was Star Wars: The Force Unleashed, which honestly wasn’t horrible. And their number three worst game…EA’s Facebook Scrabble…why is that even mentioned!?
After the jump, check out the full list and feel free to complain. (more…)

Here’s a shocker, Best Buy wants to rip you off by selling you a replacement plan for the Wii Fit. They believe that something bad can happen to the board because players of “all shape and sizes” could possibly use the game, and break it. My guess some manager thought this idea of putting up a sign, will help their sales go up for “Product Replacement Plans.” Little did he know, gamers are out in full force, and they’ll make you foolish, just like what the user Great Beyond on flickr did when he took the picture above. Folks, this is a sleazy way for Best Buy to sell you something you don’t need. If you aren’t aware (obviously the manager isn’t), the Wii Fit board can hold up to 600 lb. So if you can even find the game at your local Best Buy, don’t worry about this scam.

The Pitch: What happens when a ‘true’ gamer buys Wii Fit and runs for the first time while recording it? The Answer: Amusement for the rest of us. When I see videos like this, I first thank youtube, and then wonder why people feel the need to tape themselves.

I’m not a huge fan of Nintendo’s smash hit Wii Fit. To be honest, I’m getting a little frustrated with all these casual games hitting the market. And I find Wii Fit to be the Satan of these games. But when I see videos like this, I start to change my mind a little everyday. Although, the video will throw a curveball a few times, and when I mean a curveball, I mean ugly woman, and maybe the occasional guy. If you can look past that, this video was made for you.
