Rumor: The Old Republic Dated for September 2010

starwarsKmmo

A French fan site for BioWare’s Star Wars: The Old Republic, has given a a broad release date for the much anticipated massively-multiplayer online game. According to what they call ‘a reliable source,’ the website is dating BioWare’s next epic adventure for sometime in September of 2010. Basically if this ends up being correct, we’ll be playing The Old Republic in about a years time.

Obviously both LucasArts and BioWare have yet to confirm anything and they haven’t commented on the rumor. September of 2010 does seem like a legitimate number, but that’s kind of the problem. Could this source pick a believable date or is the company really planning to release that month?

Hopefully more concrete evidence will be revealed as GamesCon gets closer.

Star Wars: The Old Republic: Animations to be “Choreographed”

One of the most annoying things about a massively-multiplayer-online game are the animations. When Star Wars: The Old Republic was announced by BioWare last month, the one thing I thought about was how would the animations look. Star Wars is known for its fantastically smooth fighting that takes place on the silver-screen. Even though video games have yet to master the fight scenes featured in the Star Wars franchise, they are at the very least — considerably better than any MMO up to this point.

Head boss at BioWare Greg Zeschuck, apparently had the same concerns as me because he discussed it with VG247:

“If you recall some very specific things from the gameplay video, it was choreographed. One big difference, especially against the MMO space, is that typically everyone swings through each other. That’s the way it’s been done. It doesn’t look great for Star Wars.

“Star Wars is choreographed, it’s elegant; it’s big, powerful moves and lightning bolts flashing, but in a way that makes sense visually and aesthetically. One of the goals we have it to create this choreographed type of combat that looks as though it could be taking place in a Star Wars movie.”

This is pretty big news, it looks like BioWare is going to take away the old sloppy animations from MMO’s like World of Warcraft and try to make it look/feel like a movie. The question is, how? Is the fighting system going to be the same where you press one button, but instead of having poor mechanics, the game will automating detect where the characters are from each other and the environment around them — and act out a beautiful battle? Or will they go with the quick-time events — something like what god of war does with its cut scenes? Maybe, it’s something we couldn’t even figure out.

But does it matter really? Do any of us doubt the greatness of BioWare, because I sure don’t!

It’s official, Bioware and LucasArts‘ just announced the first Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic Massively Multiplayer Online game — called, Star Wars: the Old Republic During a press conference in San Francisco, CA BioWare’s CEO Ray Muzyka confirmed the company is working on the second ever Star Wars MMO and promising it’s not just a sequel to the original KOTOR game. “There’s that much to it,” he said; referring to how much more they’re adding to the game. He also noted the MMO won’t be just a planet where the player’s character will interact with other gamers who also on the same server, but everyone will be able to explore a full universe, “It’s a whole galaxy. It’s a galaxy of Star Wars.” He went on to say, “It’s going to take your gaming experience to a higher level.”

The game will take place thousands of years prior to when Darth Vader ruled the empire and about 300 years after the original Knights of the Old Republic — which was released back in 2003. If you were to compare the second installment of Knights of the Old Republic to the new MMO — don’t! The next game in series has “dwarfed” the previous entries. Muzyka called it, “A mammoth undertaking.” (more…)
