Mega64 has once again parodied “Punch-Out!!” but this time they’ll be inspired by the new Wii version as opposed to the older retro one. Derek, who is one of the members of the videogame sketch comedy group, reprises his role as the loud mouth trainer, Doc. This time he runs around the beaches of San Diego and asks random people same questions that Doc says to Little Mac from the game.
Like every other Mega64 video, there are times were it gets very uncomfortable — especially with the last gentleman who has the saxophone… Watch to find out what I mean.
While having a discussion with the Official Nintendo Magazine, Ken Yeeloy, producer of the new Punch-Out!! for the Wii, talked about how he would like to continue the series with a sequel. “I would love to make a sequel. I think with this first product, we wanted to make sure there was a definite, undeniable connection to the original,” Yeeloy said. “The sequel would be our opportunity to evolve the franchise further and add some cool, new things.”
Now, I would be all up for a brand new Punch-Out!!, but my major concern would if the developers made it to much the same. Besides the the obviously graphical upgrade and the added motion controls, this new version didn’t change too much when compared to the original NES game. Thankfully, the minds behind the first game already figured what they could change to make the sequel fresh.
“Cooperative, competitive multiplayer support or create-a-boss mode would be places to start but we’d need to come up with a new ‘hook’ like the motion controllers gave us in this iteration,” said Bryce Holliday, who also worked on the Wii version.
I do dig the idea of creating a boss. Not only does making his appearance should like fun to do, but also programming how he fights should definitely be part of it. Imagine having your friends figure out his patterns that you made; that just sounds entertaining to me. I also would like to see maybe MotionPlus controls added, as well as players going on the Wii Fit Balance Boards to dodges opponents punches.
And oh, they would also have to throw in some online multiplayer component, as well.
If they can integrate things like that — I would totally buy this next sequel to the famous boxing series.
Nintendo is getting a little kooky as of late, and this latest Internet advertisement for Punch-Out!! proves it. The video is shot in a mocumentary style, which follows Little Mac make his comeback after 15 years when he apparently lost his title to King Hippo.
We see Little Mac going through his ‘tremendous’ workout with his trainer Doc, and Mac even believes he could be the hardest working fighter of this generation. Seriously after watching video, it it’s hard to argue that point.
Check out the hilarious clip up top and after the jump, watch Doc demonstrate how to box with the Wii. (more…)
Okay, so we talked about X-Play’s Morgan Webb being invited to the Jimmy Fallon Show, because the show can’t book superstars. That’s a moot point, because at least the TV host is keeping his promise of focusing more on video games. Which is something no other mainstream talk show has done.
The conversation between Fallon and Webb was rather boring, but I’m not blaming Fallon on this one. Morgan Webb seemed rather uncomfortable with her being on the show, in front of an audience no less. She was talking quite fast, and I’m not sure if a non-gamer would have actually cared about her or her “passion” for video games. Oh well.
At one point, Morgan and Fallon walked over to a large screen. They then proceed to play Nintendo’s Punch-Out!! for the Wii and it proved on thing. Jimmy Fallon sucks at video games.
Although, i did laugh pretty hard at one point. But it had nothing to do with Jimmy or Morgan. It was with the interaction between Ice-T and Elmo… Yes Elmo from Sesame Street! How many times do we see them have a conversation together!? That’s right. Never.
Elmo FTW!
I embedded the Hulu clip which shows the whole show. I think everyone should watch the Elmo segments. He appears on the show as a guest around the 22:39 mark. If you have no soul and just want to watch the Morgan Webb clip, she comes on around the 29:00 mark.
Here is another trailer for Punch-Out!!. For the most part, the footage has already been seen through other various trailers. However, towards the end of the clip we get to see, for the first time ever, multiplayer. If we choose to battle one of our friends in the boxing game, we’ll fight by having the display go into a side-by-side split screen. From there, the gameplay mechanics will be similar to the original game. Although, when one of the players is doing well — he/she will turn into ‘Giga Mac,’ which is kinda like a steroid version of ‘Little Mac’. Obviously whomever turns into ‘Giga,’ will have the upper-hand in the match.
Punch–Out!! for the Wii is one of those titles I get giddy when I think about it. Like so many other Nintendo fanboys, I’ve been waiting patiently for a new installment, ever since the N64 came out. Obviously that never happened, so I was sure we would’ve seen one on the Gamecube. Years later, I realized that was never going to be a reality, either. Then the Wii came out, but at that point I figured the series was never going to resurrect itself. Then last year, we were blessed to hear that the Big N was indeed planning on releasing a new version of their famous boxing game.
Overall I’ve been very pleased with the progress of the game, besides the dim lighting in the background. Graphically the title has updated itself, but the original gameplay mechanics look to be the same — which is important for a game like Punch-Out!!. Not only that, we’ll also be able to play with the motion sensors if we want too or play like the old-school way, with just the buttons on the controller. Although its not confirmed, it looks like the title will have the ability to utilize the Wii Fit Balance Board to dodge opponent’s punches.
After the jump, check out the new screens. (more…)
The weekly show for GameTrailers TV on Spike is premiering its new time this Thursday at 12:30AM. Not only is it a new time, but the show looks to reveal footage for 2K’s BioShock 2 Sea of Dreams, for the first time. The show will also exclusively debut the Big Sister in action as she takes on the star of the game, a Big Daddy.
Not only that, Nintendo’sReggie is set to announce a new feature that will be included for Punch-Out!! for the Wii. What could it be? Well, our guess is the confirmation of the Wii Balance Board working with the game. This is something that we thought would eventually be announced and has been rumored for sometime now. The show is also going to reveal a brand new trailer for the boxing game.
During the same episode, Sony is promised to speak about a “major announcement” for their exclusive hit Killzone 2. On top of that, the company is going to discuss the future of their popular first-person shooter.
Make sure you tune in this Thursday at 12:30 in the morning on Spike TV. However, if you miss it, make sure you come back to /gamer because we should have all the info for you.
Update: Our buddies over at Ripten contacted Nintendo of America and tried to get an official response. The Nintendo rep replied by saying “Nintendo of America has not announced anything regarding Punch-Out!! and the Wii Balance Board.” This does not mean the Italian press release was wrong. All this reveals, is a confirmation that NoA hasn’t announced anything…yet.
Just like we predicted sometime ago, Punch-Out!! for the Wii will take advantage of the Wii Balance Board. The news comes straight from Nintendo, who sent out an Italian press earlier today. The mention confirmed that the player can dodge punches from his opponents by shifting his weight side-by-side on the board. This was something I was hoping for, and thought Nintendo would add the feature to their famous boxing remake. It seemed like a perfect fit, and now I can see if it actually is.
Of course, if you don’t feel like moving, you can simply play the game like the older NES version and dodge by pressing the Wiimote’s D-pad. Yeah, screw the evolution of gaming!
Punch-Out!! for the Wii is scheduled to hit stores this May.
The guys over at gonintendo have uploaded a new trailer for the Wii’s Punch-Out!! and boy, I can’t wait. The boxing classic looks pretty much a remake of the original game and for some people, that could be a negative. However, for me — it’s just what I want and I hope most of you agree.
The only minor complaint I have is its just a tad to dark. The older games had a little more brightness and felt more ‘alive.’ In the NES version, you could see the whole audience while you fight, but in the new installment, they are darkened it out to the point where you can’t see them. I guess it is more like a real boxing match — but that’s the thing, Punch-Out!! is super unrealistic and that is why we all love it!
If you are one of the millions who are patiently waiting for the next installment of Punch-Out!! for the Wii, you won’t have to wait much longer. According to the UK’s Official Nintendo Magazine, we can expect to see Little Mac fight his way up to the top this May. That’s right, in about two months, we should finally play a new Punch-Out!! and the last time we could say that was about 15 years ago. Some of you who are reading this might have not even been born when the last game was released — yeah, its been that long.
The game is confirmed that the story will be like the originals, where it follows the boxer ‘Little Mac,” who is from the Bronx, NY. As you control Mac, you will box through the ranks and hopefully become the World Champion. Yeah, it basic and awesome at the same time!
The Black Axe is a t-shirt design company that thinks up shirts for various bands. The shirt up top is for the group “New Found Glory,” and the concept is obviously heavily-influenced by ‘Punch-Out!!.’
The shirt features two boxers, who are unquestionably similar to ‘Little Mac‘ and ‘Bald Bull‘ from the classic boxing video game.
I wish I liked the band more, but because I’m not a fan — I kinda wish they sold the shirt without the name of the rock group.

The last incarnation of Punch-Out!! came out in the mid-90s for the Super NES. So, to say we’ve been waiting for another installment would be an understatement. Thankfully, Nintendo has finally listened to us and announced months ago, a brand new version for the Wii. However, since that time, no other information was released.
Maybe we were being a little ungrateful, but we wondered how fun a motion controlled version could be, when compared to some of the older installments. Sure, we enjoyed Wii Boxing, but the gameplay for that was more of a ’swinging your arms uncontrollably and hopping your opponent took most of the blows to the head.’
Punch-Out!! is different, it took skill and timing. Not only did the game require great reaction time, but you had to learn the opponents patterns. Because of that, we were not sure if the Wimote would work for a game like Punch-Out!!
Luckily, Nintendo is going give us an option to have both motion and button pressing and then we can decided for ourselves, which will be better. According to Kotaku, the publisher is going to include an alternative control scheme, similar to the older titles. If we choose to select the old-skool button layout, we simply will have turn the Wiimote sideways and just use the D-pad as well as the ‘1′ and ‘2′ buttons.
Nintendo decided to dropped a slew of ‘time frames’ and release dates for some of their biggest games that come this year. According to Videogamer, the remakes for both Pikmin and Mario Tennis for the Wii will be on store shelves this March for the US, while Europe will receive them on February 6 and March 3, respectively.
The long awaited and next installment for the Punch-Out!! franchise will come out on the Wii in the first half of 2009. Another notable game, Pokemon Platinum should be out on March 22 for the US, while no European date has been set.
When Ready 2 Rumble debuted for the Dreamcast almost 10 years ago, people praised the game for its unbelievable graphics. While the game was certainly fun for its time, it was a tad basic and by no means deep. But many people excused the flaws because of how it looked.
At the time Midway released the title, it was obviously heavily influenced by Nintendo’s ‘Punch-Out!!’ series. Rumble had the same type of goofy cartoony boxers that ‘Punch-Out!!’ started years before. However, that is not the only reason why gamers consider Nintendo’s boxing game legendary. Sure it was cute, but it also had depth. It was up to the player to understand and learn the opponent’s consistent patterns. It took a lot of failing in order to beat the game. But at the time, that is what made it outstanding.
Ready 2 Rumble did the complete opposite. The game was 100% trying to appeal to gamers by its good graphics and cartoony characters. When we look back at it, the gameplay was not as important. The fighting system was more of a button masher with limited moves. Again, it wasn’t bad — it just doesn’t nearly hold up to the test of time like Punch-Out!!.
Apparently Atari own the rights to Ready 2 Rumble and has the talented team over at AKI (WWF Now Mercy) developing the boxing title for the Wii. If somehow AKI can mix the fun characters with good quality gameplay and utilize the Wiimote — this game could be fun. However, if Atari wants a quick buck than we should all just skip it.
In the end, I do trust AKI and if anyone knows how to make a deep fighting system; it would be them. After the Jump check out the second video.
Ready 2 Rumble: Revolution should be available in March 2009. (more…)
Here is the debut trailer for the return of Punch-Out!! for the Nintendo Wii. As of now, we have no details about the mechanics of the game, but like we said before, we really think Nintendo is going to use the Wii-Fit balance board to dodge punches. If for some reason they don’t include the board, we can guarantee our board is going to suffocate to death due to dust. On top of that, if they wouldn’t at the very least give player the option to use it, how much different would the game be than Wii Sports ‘Boxing?’
