Infinity Ward: Modern Warfare 2 Online Multiplayer will be Free

A few days ago, destructoid noticed a survey that suggested that Activision was looking into a possible MMO-style service for their Call of Duty franchise. Right away, fans of series were starting to think the publisher was going to create a premium service package for Modern Warfare 2, which would require a paid subscription fee. While I thought it meant more for a possible Call of Duty-MMO in the future, many fans were already thinking about how they were going to pay a monthly fee to play Modern Warfare 2.

Thankfully the developers Infinity Ward, has commented about the rumors and they have confirmed this survey has nothing to do with Modern Warfare 2.

“This rumor has absolutely nothing to do with Infinity Ward or our games, including Modern Warfare 2. We would never introduce such a system for Modern Warfare 2 so don’t worry.

Multiplayer will always be equal and free for everyone as always.”

So everyone can calm down because a subscription is not going to happen. Although, expect to drop down some cash for extra maps and maybe even new weapons as downloadable content.

Why the Call of Duty Name was Dropped from Modern Warfare 2

When the first teaser trailer for Modern Warfare 2 was released a few months back, one of the things people noticed was how the name changed. The first-person shooter didn’t include the Call of Duty title, and was oddly just called Modern Warfare 2. Because of that, most figured that Activision dropped the COD name, and decided to just use Modern Warfare.

MTV spoke with Infinity Ward’s community manager Robert Bowling, about why they chose to minus Call of Duty from the official name.

“This is a direct sequel to Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. That is what we are trying to get across to our audience. It’s not just another one in the Call of Duty franchise. This has never happened in Call of Duty before. They’re typically their own campaigns and totally unrelated to the previous one. This one, is indeed a direct sequel and we just want to make that clear.”

Now this is pure speculation on my part, but I believe Activision were the ones to change the title. I’m guessing the Call of Duty franchise name will still live on, but will only be used when Treyarch (COD3, World at War) develops their version, which looks to happen every other year. This would be a way for Activision to distinguish to the consumer that Infinity Ward & Treyarch’s titles are two separate games.

If this ends up happening, it’s kinda funny (and sad) to see Infinity Ward loose the rights to a name which they started, way back in 2003.

E3 09: First Gameplay Footage of Modern Warfare 2

Head developer of Modern Warfare 2 Jason West, took the stage earlier today, during the Xbox E3 briefing. Obviously West there to support and show off his anticipated first-person shooter, and boy is it looking good.

Up top is the full demo which was shown during the show, and hopefully what we will be playing this week on the show floor of the convention.

The clip starts of with a character, who gamers will control, mountain climbing in a blinding snow storm. The cool thing about this scene is it is fully playable, which should really help players feel immersive.

Of course this is Modern Warfare 2, so even though it looks like the game is going to add various mechanics to the gameplay, the most important aspect is the shooting.

Have no fear, it looks like it plays very similar to Modern Warfare 1, but with some added tweaks. My favorite thing I noticed was the animation of the enimeies getting shot. At one point of video, you will see the main character on the bottom of a hill, with enemies up top in a line looking down. As the player picks off each enemy, they suddenly fall to the snowy ground, and slide down the hill. Meaning, the environments really do look more interactive, and should help with the gameplay overall.

The demo has also confirmed that vehicles are playable, most notably snowmobiles. While it’s cool to include various elements of gameplay, I wasn’t to impressed with this particular moment of the game. The driving just didn’t seem to flow to well, and seemed out of place. Of course, I’m assuming this is a really small portion of the game, so even if it isn’t as fun as the rest of the game, it should not be that long until it is over.

Check out the video up top.

Three New Screens for Modern Warfare 2 Could Give Some Insight

Because the new trailer was just released, Infinity Ward has redone the new website for Modern Warfare 2. The site gives you access to the brand new clip that was first shown during the NBA Playoffs. However, the site unveiled three new screenshots from the game.

We have posted these shots and you can see the other two after the jump. Each screen is high-res, 1920×1200 to be exact. So make sure you click on them to enlarge each photo, trust me it is worth it.

Notice the picture above? Check out the guy in the alleyway. Does he look like a civilian? If he is, he seems like he is getting shot, which proves my thinking that innocent people running through the streets can and will be shot. (more…)

First Full Trailer for Modern Warfare 2

Today is the big day Modern Warfare fans have been waiting for. Infinity Ward has finally released the first ever non-teaser trailer for their highly anticipated first-person shooter Modern Warfare 2, for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC.

The first couple of teasers the studio showed off prior to this newest one, really proved to me how much more destruction went on the screen. Naturally, this trailer is once again featuring an abundant amount of explosions, and what looks like a lot more interaction with the environment.

The most exciting thing I saw during this new trailer is seeing the unarmed civilians running through the streets, covering their heads from gunfire. This should really add to the player feeling immersive inside a terrorist conflict, where innocent people happen to be right smack in the middle of it. Imagine trying to shoot the enemy but at the same time, trying to avoid hitting harmless people running around the streets? How awesome does that sound?

Infinity Ward certainly is not messing around with Modern Warfare 2, and somehow it looks like they are about to outdo their other masterpieces.

Second Teaser Trailer for Modern Warfare 2

As promised, Gametrailers has released more gameplay footage for Infinity Ward’s Modern Warfare 2. About half of the clip is never before seen footage, while the rest is the same thing we saw last week when it premiered during the NBA Playoffs.

One thing I noticed while viewing the teaser is how destructive the environments look, when compared to the first Modern Warfare. During the video, we see a lot of fire and explosions going on during the course of the trailer. As this happens, the props around the game interact with some of these explosions. For instance, 15 seconds into the video, a car blows up, jumps into the air and looks like it’s about to roll down a hill. If that is the case, that would pretty epic stuff going on.

The most impressive thing I saw when it comes to the environment, would be when the two guys fall out of a window. With glass shattering everywhere as they break through the window, they fall on what looks like a car. Most games would have the two guys hit the vehicle and that’s it. That’s not the case in Modern Warfare 2. In this game, the top part of the car caves in from the impact of the two guys, which in my opinion is pretty damn impressive.

Check out the second teaser trailer above.

More Footage for Modern Warfare 2 to Debut on Gametrailers

Here is a brief tidbit from Geoff Keighley’s twitter account. According to the host of Gametrailers TV, the show will debut more footage of the highly-anticipated first-person shooter Modern Warfare 2. Keighley wrote:

“Exclusive new Modern Warfare 2 footage impacts GTTV on Thursday night on Spike. It’s just a teaser, but the new scenes are incredible!”

Now, from what we’re hearing the footage will be similar in-terms of length as the quick commercial that was shown during the NBA Playoffs on TNT. The official trailer, that wouldn’t be consider a teaser, is expected to air during the NBA Eastern Conference Finals on May 24th and on TNT, as well.

New Teaser Trailer for Modern Warfare 2

TNT has been promoting that during the NBA Eastern Conference Finals, the network will broadcast the “world premiere” of Modern Warfare 2 on May 24th. This isn’t the first time the Modern Warfare series was shown to the world during a sports event. In 2007, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare was broadcast for the first time during the NFL Draft.

During the commercial, they showed a tease of footage from the sequel to the highly-anticipated first-person shooter.

I noticed some interesting things during the teaser trailer, which I hope are elements of gameplay. For instance, snowmobiles could be one of the perhaps many vehicles which could be playable throughout the game. Also, Judging the underwater portion of the trailer, I’m hoping the Navy Seals are an added unit in the game.

Towards the beginning of the trailer, we see what looked like a solider running up behind an enemy. It seemed like he was on the verge of melee attack, but apparently the one that was about to be hit, grabbed his opponents arm and flipped him. Could that be a new attack feature? I think so!

Check it out op top.

Rumor: Call of Duty 7 Set During the Vietnam War

We know Modern Warfare 2 is about six months away from being released. Despite the fact, it looks Activision is already figuring out with what their going to do with “Call of Duty 7.” The news comes from a “reliable” source who told the website thatvideogameblog that Noah Heller is involved with the project. If this is the case, then Treyarch would be developing the seventh installment of the franchise. For the last couple of years, every time ‘Infinity Ward‘ (Modern Warfare) creates a COD title, the following year the next game would develop by Treyarch. So, it looks like the ritual is still going to continue.

The insider told the site that Activision is trying to license music from record companies, that were record around the time of the Vietnam War. If the publisher is really trying to get a hold of the tunes, it would be safe to suggest that the next Call of Duty would be told during the Vietnam Era. Which, I don’t think is a bad idea considering there hasn’t been enough games which took place during the controversial conflict. And certainly not as many as World War II title.

It’ll be interesting to see if the name Call of Duty is used for the alleged game. I believe it will be, because I’m guessing Activision is reserving the name for Treyarch titles.

If you hope to hear an announcement at E3 — don’t! Because realistically if the game is being developed, it is in the very early stages. On top of that, Activision is going to solely focus on Modern Warfare 2, for the show.

Modern Warfare 2 Drops Call of Duty

Man, what’s up with all these name changes and stuff. First we’re told Bioshock 2 would include the subtitle ‘Sea of Dreams.’ Then a few months later, a 2K employee confirmed they dropped the title — a few days after that, the name was back on. Now, we’re hearing that maybe its not, and honestly — I don’t care.

Last night, Infinity Ward released the first teaser for their next game Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. But apparently, they dropped the whole Call of Duty name and is now only called Modern Warfare 2. I guess Activision believes the Modern Warfare name is valuable in its own right. My bet is the publisher is going to continue to make Call of Duty games, but try to keep the Modern Warfare brand separate. Hell it’s Activision, I wouldn’t be surprised if we see another Call of Duty by years end, along with Modern Warfare 2. If we’re lucky, maybe we’ll see a Call of Duty: Greatest Hits game, just like Guitar Hero! I even hope they create 13 different CoD’s for the DS by years end.
