Yikes! Sony as just announced that the anticipated, yet super innovative title Heavy Rain, is going to require a 4.2GB install, when the game is first put inside PlayStation 3s. That obviously means gamers who purchase the game will have to wait an extensive amount of time before they even can experience the universe that Quantic Dream has developed.
Unlike most games that require the dreaded install, the guys behind the game will try and keep gamers entertained for however long it will take. It has been confirmed once the install screen appears, players will be able to create a swanorigami. Sure, it’s nothing special and I’m sure most gamers would rather play the psychological-thriller right when they pop the game inside their PS3, it’s better then having to wait and watch a loading screen appear for what seems like an eternity.
Heavy Rain is shipping into stores on February 23rd and 24th in both North America and Europe, receptively. A demo is also expected to hit the PlayStation Network on February 11th.
It was confirmed awhile back that the psychological thriller Heavy Rain would have a demo available on the PlayStation Network before the title makes its way onto store shelves, come February 23rd. The game is going to be one difficult game to market towards non-hardcore gamers around the world; however one way the studio, Quantic Dream, hopes to overcome the hurdle is by having those same gamers try a tease of the PS3 exclusive title.
Today, Sony has announced the demo will be available to download on PSNFebruary 11th — in Europe anyway. A North American date has yet to be revealed, and quite honestly, be confirmed if we’ll even see one. Of course, if for some insane reason we don’t get it over here in the States, there are still ways to download the demo through the PlayStation Network, but that’s up to you to figure out. But to be honest, I can’t see that even being a issue, my guess we’ll get one around the same time as the countries across the pond.
Heavy Rain is easily one of the most anticipated PlayStation 3 exclusive titles to come out for the console. I would probably put it right behind God of War III as being the next must own PS3-only title. Sadly, owners of the newest Sony system are going to have to wait until next year to get their hands on this original drama game. Thankfully, the studio behind Heavy Rain, Quantic Dream, has confirmed a playable demo will be available before the title arrives in stores.
The writer as well as the director for the game,David Cage, wants a demo because he wants gamers who might not have heard about the title, to experience it. Although, finding what scene the demo will be is a challenge in-itself. Unlike most videogames, Heavy Rain relies solely on the story, and not the action. Picking out a scene for a game like this, is more like when a movie studio decides to release a five-minute clip online for a particular film. However, this could be harder because most gamers are looking for action, rather than story, especially when they play a demo.
“We are currently working on a demo, which is a real challenge,” said Cage. “Finding one scene that can convey what we are trying to achieve with Heavy Rain is something really difficult. If we show an action scene, some players will think that this is what Heavy Rain is all about, and it is the same thing if we show an exploration scene. The problem is that each scene of the game offers contextual game play, which is something very difficult to explain and convey in a single demo. Demos are often a double-edge thing: if you don’t release one, players may think that you have something to hide.”
“We also know many good games that ended up not being massive hits because the demo could not convey the quality of the game behind it,”said Cage. “Because Heavy Rain is a new concept and since many gamers will want to check what it is before buying it, we will be releasing a demo. We just need to find the best scene for it.”
No word yet when the demo will drop on the PlayStation Network.

A new Heavy Rain trailer has been released, thanks to Gamescom going on right now in Germany. The clip follows a brand new playable character, whose son was hit and killed by a car. As the trailer progresses, you see the father’s life start to quickly fall apart after the accident.
When the trailer starts off, its made out that he almost had a perfect life. Nice house, two children and a beautiful wife. But soon after the boy was hit his life turnaround for the worse, he becomes wifeless, has one less son and living in a crummy, broken-down house. You can also read his face, which looks tired and looney because of the pain of loosing a son. At one point, it looks like his other son somehow goes missing which is being presented as if the Origami Killer kidnapped him.
While I’m impressed with the trailer overall, few things do bug me — most notably the voiceover. While I respect the fact that Quantic Dream is trying to engross the player to have some sort of emotional attachment to the character because of his son dying. The acting is rather cheesy and somewhat hurts the overall feeling of sadness they are trying to represent in the video.
The one game I’m trying to keep an eye out for at E3 is Quantic Dream’sHeavy Rain for the PlayStation 3. Not much information has been released and honestly, I’m not sure how if it will end up being good, or what. However, Quantic Dream (Indigo Prophecy) is a extremely talented developer and from what we are hearing, Heavy Rain is going to take some huge and innovative risks. Which I think the industry needs in order to continue to grow.
With that said, David Cage who is the director of Heavy Rain spoke about his big Project with nowgamer and he believes the title could not be achieved on the Xbox 360.
“I think this game can only be done on Playstation 3, we used all the SPUs. I think to do the visuals, and all the stuff we’re doing would be too difficult [on the 360]. There are amazing physics there, and stuff with crowds that you just couldn’t really get [with the 360]“
Interesting stuff and this should get all the fanboys for each system all riled up.
Heavy Rain should hopefully be shipped to the PlayStation 3 later this year, although I’m not holding my breath for that to actually happen.
In the next day or so, Sony will be holding a press conference and having a sneak peak at some of the games that will grace the floor of E3. The titles that are going to be shown off include; Heavy Rain, White Knight Chronicles, SOCOM Fireteam Bravo 3, MotorStorm: Arctic Edge, Jak & Daxter: The Lost Frontier and Uncharted 2: Among Thieves.
Interesting enough, Zipper Interactive’sMAG could be a no-show for the press briefing. Although, I can’t confirm that and if it isn’t, it does NOT mean it won’t be at this year’s E3. In-fact, I’m almost 100% sure it will be there. The same thing applies to God of War III.
Out of everything mentioned that will be at the briefing is Heavy Rain. Come to think of it, I have more questions for Heavy Rain, when compared to any other game to be released this year.
Make sure to comeback to /gamer, as we will try to report any info that comes out of the conference.
Heavy Rain is shaping up to be one of the best graphically looking games to come out for any next-generation system. The biggest question for many of us is what kind of game is it? We’re not to sure, but we certainly like to know.
Today, we have got our hands on a few new screens for the game, but of course it reveals very little. Although, if you look at the details of the pictures, you’ll notice a few things. One of the pictures look to have a split screen involved, could the game have split-screen feature to tell the story and maybe to know where enemies are lurking?
The other thing we found is the game looks to place in the United States. The picture that is obviously outside has an American flag hanging outside of a house…in the rain. Don’t those people know when it rains, the flag is supposed to come down?
Heavy Rain sure looks gorgeous and extremely cinematic. Generally speaking video games don’t hold a candle to movies in terms of storyline and dialogue. But as of late, games like Bioshock have sure started to change my mind. Heavy Rain looks to have the creepy atmosphere that Bioshock did so well. The same teaser trailer was that shown atGames Convention in Germany last month, now has a direct feed of it online. And it even looks more beautiful than it did before.
We did notice something that the protagonist said in the trailer and we didn’t catch during our first viewing. Before she enters the house, she talks into what looks to be a voice recorder and says, “Tuesday, November third…”. After we heard that, we decided to go check out what day November 3, 2009, falls on. To our surprise it’s a Tuesday. If you don’t realize by now, video games are usually released in stores on a Tuesday, and Heavy Rain is scheduled to come out in 2009. Did the developers leave a clue about when they expect their next game to come out. Maybe, but we also could be jumping to conclusion.
After the jump, check out the direct feed teaser trailer. (more…)
Sony has just finally shown a trailer for the much anticipated game, Heavy Rain for the PS3. And oh man does it look amazing (graphics). What you see up top is the actual video from Sony’s conference (off screen), and Quantic Dream looks like they want to get across that the game is going to have a cinematic feel and oh boy, do they get that across. One of the ways their going to accomplish this will be using quick time events, much like God of War, and Dragons Lair, but much faster then we’ve ever seen before. No word on any kind of combat system.
Gamekyo saw a ‘walk through’ of Sony’s press conference at the Games Conventions in Leipzig, Germany. Because of their spying, they found some information regarding what Sony will be talking about for the PlayStation 3.
The biggest news that Sony will be showing is their much-hyped game Heavy Rain being developed by Quantic Dream. In terms of how much will be shown is still not clear, but they will announce the game is going to be released in 2009. Sony also has plans to show a new LittleBigPlanet trailer and it will debut during the conference.
The karaoke hit game SingStar for the PS2 will be making an appearance for the PS3, but the details are also vague, but honestly, do you really care?
If Heavy Rain can live up to the hype, 2009 might also be ‘the year of the PS3.’
We know very little about QuanticDream’s next game HeavyRain besides the fact that it has rain, a lot of rain. From the title, to the first trailer, and now this new screenshot. I’m wondering if the game will pour outside throughout the game. Maybe the story will only take place around one day during a storm. Either way, the graphics look to be some of the best of this generation.
