Reggie: The Wii Can “Win Over the Halo Audience”

Lets all face it, many Wii haters dislike the system because of its continue marketing towards the casual gamer. For the most part, it seems as though Nintendo has completely separated itself from the hardcore demographic. And E3 2008 certainly didn’t help with that perception, although 2009’s showing was a tad better.

With that said, Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime, spoke about the bad taste some gamers have received as of late with the Wii. According to him, the hardcore gamer will be switching over to the Wii this year, and when that happens — they will buy into games like Wii Fit Plus.

“We think we [can] win over the Halo audience with something like The Conduit, a multi-player, online, shooting experience, or Dead Space Extraction. And you know what? Once those people buy into Wii, they’ll go buy Mario Kart or Wii Fit Plus.”

First, I want to make sure all of you understand that I do not hate the Wii. But if Nintendo truly believes that ‘The Conduit‘ and/or Dead Space Extraction is going to win over the Halo audience, they’re going to be disappointed. I’m impressed with what High Voltage has done with The Conduit considering the limitations of the Wii’s hardware, but in order for the ‘Halo’ audience to switch games, The Conduit would have to be a superior game. And I’m sorry to say, I don’t see that happening.

While Dead Space Extraction looks like a decent ‘rail-shooter,’ in the end that’s all it is — a rail-shooter. I don’t expect people who play Halo to an extreme level, switching their beloved first-person shooter so they can play Dead Space Extraction, and have a limited gameplay experience.

And oh, there is no way in hell that these same people (as a whole) would go out and purchase Wii Fit Plus. Mario Kart maybe, but definitely not Wii Fit.

Come on Reggie, couldn’t you have answered the question with a more constructed B.S. reply?

Microsoft Announces Zune HD, Could Halo Be Revealed at E3?

Do you remember that iPod killer thing that was manufactured by Microsoft, called Zune? Yeah, it certainly didn’t touch the iPod in terms of sales, but that hasn’t stopped Microsoft from retrying once again.

The company has just announced a new, sleeker version, now dubbed Zune HD. Obviously by adding the “H” & the “D” to the end of the name, they hope that will help people realize this is a high-tech device. Although, the features suggest it’s trying to be an iPhone, but without the phone part — so I guess its just an iPod touch.

This new version is going to have a few new elements, when compared to the older version. The biggest difference this time around is the touchscreen, which is something most handhelds will include in the future. I’m guessing Microsoft plans on including some kind of app-store, where games will be made available to owners for download. In the same press release, the company mentioned how they plan on integrating Xbox Live to the unit, but didn’t go into any other details.

However, they did mention how more information will become available at E3, next week. That alone tells me Microsoft plans on bringing some kind of mobile gaming to the Zune. Remember, E3 is for the most part — a video game convention.

I might even have more evidence to support this theory. Last month, Microsoft posted a classified ad on Careerbuilder.com. The posting was trying to find a suitable applicant to bring the Halo world to mobile devices. Could this Hale mobile device application be for the Zune HD? Maybe. If this is the case, what a great move on Microsoft’s part because that is something they have, that Apple doesn’t — first-party games. Of course, this is nothing but speculation.

Some other features the Zune HD offers include:

*HD Radio

*HD Video Output (720p)

*Wifi

*Accelerometer

*OLED Display

*480 x 272 Resolution

Microsoft expects the Zune HD to come out this fall, just in time for the holidays. However, I wouldn’t start thinking this is also going to be an iPhone killer too, and for a number of reasons. One, it is not a phone and two, it doesn’t really do anything innovative but copy many of the iPhone’s features. Also, Apple should be announcing the successor of their second generation phones, and I’m pretty sure it will update many features, as well include new and original ones.

After the jump, check out the full press release. (more…)

Fan Made Halo Map Inspired By Hyrule From Zelda

Zeldatohalo created the N64 version of Hyrule from the Legend of Zelda, by modding the PC version of Halo. If you played Ocarina of Time, be prepared to be blown away because this is just incredible.

The level of detail is astonishing and as I watched this, I was amazed of how much time some people have on their hands. By the end of me viewing the video, I have come to the realization that I’m happy they do.

The Simpsons: Homer Teabags in Halo

If you missed last night’s episode of the Simpsons, then shame on you. Anyway, last night’s episode was about how Homer wanted to send Bart and Lisa to Waverly Hills, and one way he decided to do it was to move into a bachelor pad.

For a brief moment during the show, Homer was playing an unnamed game, which is reminiscent of Halo. During the time he was playing the shooter, Homer did what we all do in the online portion of the famous FPS. Of course I’m talking about the greatest insult known to man — teabagging. Even his wife Marge, gets into the action. Hot!

Mobile Halo Project in the Works?

Is Microsoft planning on bringing their ultra-popular Halo franchise to the mobile phones? Well, according to a careerbuilder classified ad, they just might be thinking that. The posting is looking for a software development engineer to “deliver a great out-of-game interactive experience that takes the next step beyond the systems found in Halo 3.” The add also wrote that the developer will design and deliver “code for services supporting community applications and game titles.” As well as “building user-facing on-console features such as forums, tournament ladders, media libraries, and integrated mini-games.”

The job description also mentioned what Microsoft plans on doing, it read: “We’re looking to blend console, web, and mobile to create an immersive Halo world that follows the dedicated Halo fan wherever they go. We need engineers that can build connected technology while working in a startup environment.”

We want to make sure you know that this does not mean a Halo game is in the works. The only thing we know is that Microsoft plans on bringing some kind of Halo community aspect to mobile phones. Which could be as simple as seeing your progress by using your phone or something to that nature. Sadly, to me, that’s what it kinda seems like.

Cool Stuff: Master Chief Helmet That You Can Wear

Just in time for Halloween, Microsoft has officially licensed this Halo helmet. As you can see from the picture above, the Master Chief mask has fantastic detail and even includes ‘dents & scratches‘ to make it seem like it went through a battle with the Covenant. Also, either side of the helmet offers LED search lights that can be turned on and off. So if you loose your keys and it’s dark — you’re all set.

Unlike the ‘free’ helmet that came with the super-duper ‘limited edition’ version of Halo 3, this one you can wear. It’ll also fit most adults and be comfortable at the same time because it is padded all around in the inside.

Of course awesomeness doesn’t come cheap, the Master Chief mask costs $115, but when you think about it, that’s a small price to pay to excrete greatness. Woman will be all over you staying away from you. But hey — who needs them when you look like Master Chief? Not me, that’s for sure!

Politician Smears his Opponent Because He Plays Halo — We Endorse the Other Guy

Fulton Brock, is a Republican incumbent who is trying to win back his seat as the country supervisor in Maricopa County, AZ. His opponent — Ed Hermes (24) a young up-and-comer Democrat who is being labeled as ‘inexperience’ throughout the race. Kinda sounds like another election going on…

Brock’s campaign has once again try to reiterate their position on his lack of experience by smearing him as a gamer:

Skilled player of popular game Halo. Hermes was quoted in the ASU student newspaper as saying: “I am addicted to ‘Halo’ and play almost every night.”

Its good to know Fulton Brock has decided to stick to the issues (/sarcastic), I have know idea what either of them believe in but being a gamer shouldn’t be on the table as a flaw in character. Brock also criticizes Hermes on not only being a Halo fanboy but also a college mascot and blogger.

Although, I was never a mascot, I’m in-fact a blogger and gamer so because Fulton Brock thinks very little me and my colleagues, /gamer has officially endorse Mr. Ed Hermes for county supervisor.

Rumor: Bungie to Unveil Their Secret Game Next Week?

Could Bungie be planning on announcing their newest title next week? According to the site gamer.tm, they are. The Website is said to have an industry insider directly from Microsoft who is also remaining nameless, who has reported that Bungie is unveiling their ’secret’ game next week. The same game that was supposed to be shown to the world for the first time at E3, but at the last minute scrapped by Microsoft. Thus unleashing the Bungie fanboys to condemned Microsoft for overusing their power and stop Bungie from making a successful game (yeah, fanboys are sad).

Although the source is confirming the week when it will be announced, he/she has no clue what game it could possibly be. So, we still have no indication if it will be Halo 4 or set in the Halo universe. Maybe it doesn’t even have anything to do with Halo, hopefully this source is telling the truth, because if he/she is — we’ll finally know next week.

Boy Shoots Himself Because of ‘Halo’

An 11-year-old boy named Joshua Nimm, has been killed by a gunshot wound to the head. The Johnson Creek sheriff’s department has ruled that it was nothing more than accidental shooting and the victim was mimicking the game ‘Halo.’ And after playing the game, he was recreating scenes from the ‘first person shooter’ and shot himself.

Jefferson County Detective Sgt. Larry Lee said:

“We are ruling that it is an accidental shooting, the child was getting ready for school and decided to skip school. He was playing video games and we found out he had a .22 caliber rifle that belongs to him. He had access to the rifle and a magazine was kept somewhere else by his parents. He was familiar with the rifle and had been shooting it a couple of times a month – he lived out in the country, so that was nothing unusual.”

I’m not going to get into a debate on if the kid should be shooting a gun or not. I feel as long as parents are around, I don’t see it being harmful. I do however don’t understand why his dad would keep the gun in a area where his son would have access to it. His dad would later confess that his son seemed to get confused if a magazine was in the chamber or not. If this was the case, why would the gun be loaded even in the first place. I really hope they don’t start to blame a video game  over this tragic death. If anyone is to blame, it would sadly be the fault of the parents for allowing the gun in a area where the kid could easy get it, and have it loaded.

And one last thing, If the kid was ‘recreating’ Halo, when did anyone point the gun at themselves?

Cool Stuff: Best Halo Cake Ever

Pete Tam on flickr decided snag a photo of a cake that was on display at a party he attended. The creator of the desert told him it ONLY took 5 days to make. Judging by the picture above, we can easily agree because it’s astonishing to see the level of detail of Master Chief. Our only question to the person who decided to purchase the cake for the party would be — why didn’t they have an Xbox 360 instead? I’m sure it would’ve tasted better. Either way, if this was my cake, I wouldn’t have been able to eat it, it looks way to cool. Of course, I’m sure over time Master Chief would have some kind of growth protruding from his helmet…

Source: Gearbox Not Developing Halo 4 But a New Duke Nukem Game

Thanks to a source who is closely related with Gearbox software, we have some information about what the company’s next project is going to be. The source, who shall remain nameless, gave us a tip a few days ago regarding what the Dallas based company was working on. It’s not Halo 4. We thought about posting the story right away but we waited to make sure the source was legit. Here is what he/she first said:

“Well, I can tell you that it’s not Halo 4. When it is announced fans of a series from the past will be surprised.”

While we verified the information, some news broke about how the game was in fact going to be a shooter and how it is going to be multi-platform. Obviously if it was Halo 4, it would be exclusively for the Xbox 360, thus not multi-platform. So just like our source said, it wasn’t Halo 4.

Today our source contacted us once again and gave us a little more detailed information about what game they’re working on:

“The game is closely related to the story [on Slashgamer.com] that was posted on Aug. 27th at 5:37 P.M. Very closely related.”

We then searched our articles and were surprised by the title of the post that he was referring to; “‘Duke Nukem as of Now has ‘Several Hours’ of Gameplay Under it’s Belt“.

That’s right, our insider has implied that Gearbox is working on Duke Nukem, not necessarily Duke Nukem Forever, but something that has to do with Duke Nukem none the less. After doing a little research and looking up the history of the President of Gearbox Software, Randy Pitchford, we noticed that he did work on Duke Nukem 3D as well as the N64 version Duke Nukem 64.

After digesting that information, it does make a lot of sense that Randy Pitchford would call this game “big” if it were Duke because of his history with the series. If we get anymore tips about the game we’ll post it.

Although we can’t 100% confirm this rumor, it doesn’t sound that far fetched either.

Cool Stuff: Master Chief Action Figure Disguised as Samus Aran from Metriod

Since Halo came out for the Xbox in 2001, I’ve heard countless times how Master Chief looked oddly similar to Samus Aran. The user deathwind000 from eBay also thought the same. He has a Custom made Halo 3 Spartan action figure from McFarlane toys, but painted like the Samus Aran’s Varia Suit. The seller is promising the paint job won’t rub or chip off.

When anyone sees the picture above, it’s really hard to argue that Bungie wasn’t in some way influenced by Nintendo’s Classic game-Metriod. If you’re interested in bidding for the toy, it ends on August 17 and  as we post this article, the current big is $20.51. After the Break look at more pictures.

Bungie was Supposed to have a “”Knock ‘em Down” Teaser at E3 08′

Gamerush is reporting that Jacob Metcalf (who has a source inside Bungie) said the company was going to have a  “knock ‘em down” teaser trailer at this years E3 event, only to be pulled by Microsoft soon before it was planned to be released.

“Bungie had a sixty second knock’em down teaser trailer made that was going to unveil the game and it was going to be the close to Microsoft media keynote at E3.”

“This was going to be followed up by Bungie doing their separate press event later on in the week on Wednesday to show off the new game.”
“Microsoft has never really explained why they prevented Bungie from going on with their media event on Wednesday at E3. It has to be a new Halo game since if it was an new IP Microsoft would not have their hands on the control of the brand and would not have had the power to silence Bungie about it.”

Even though Mr. Metcalf doesn’t work for Bungie or Microsoft, he has been right numerous times on his predictions on Bungie rumors. An example of this would be when: Bungie left Microsoft a few months ago.

Seems like Bungie is still venting about what happened to them at E3. It’s understandable why, but Bungie also needs to understand it’s business, and Microsoft wants to announce things at the right time. Talking about 20 different things at one press briefing isn’t a good thing. Some stuff would have been bound to get lost with all that information and could become worthless
