EA Ships Illegal Weapons to Journalists

In most US States, brass knuckles are illegal to own. In fact, if you are caught with one, it’s considered a first-degree misdemeanor, in many states. If you didn’t know that, don’t worry, neither did EA. A bunch of American journalists received the weapon from the publisher, in hopes it would be a good way to promote their latest Godfather game.

Oddly enough, when GamePolitics contacted EA and informed them that owning a brass knuckle could land him in court, EA asked the to ship it back. The website then proceeded to ask a PR spokesperson from the company if other sites were asked to return the knuckles. The PR’s response was “I can’t discuss this any further.”

Thankfully other websites like Kotaku, are reporting that EA wants their Brass Knuckles “properly disposed of.” Once again, the world is safe from video game bloggers… For now.

Dead Space Engine to be licensed Out

Creating gaming engines these days is big money. Just ask Epic Games who developed the highly-successful Unreal Engine. Their newest engine, Unreal Engine 3, is used by almost every big gaming company including EA, Capcom, 2K Games, Sega, Sony and more. And almost every genre uses it, from fighting to driving.

Understanding how much money one company can make creating one, EA has decided to license out the engine from their sci-fi horror game Dead Space.

The roots of the engine dated back with the 2005 Bond game, ‘From Russia with Love,’ and the 2006 video game adaption ‘The Godfather.’ The sequel to the Godfather for the Xbox 360 and PS3, also is using the same engine which should be out in 2009. As we write this now, lawyers are currently sorting the mumbo jumbo legal stuff and figuring out what to name the engine.

According to gameplayer, EA should be making an announcement soon, and when they do, we’ll bring it to you.

Godfather II Trailer

The Godfather II trailer has surfaced online thanks to gametrailers. The game looks to really focuses on controlling your group of mobsters. At one point in the trailer (a little more then half way), the main “don,” named Dominick says, “My men or more then just a group, their a family.” As he’s saying the voice over, it shows pictures of different men being selected to “bomb” a building. And then ends with, “I call the shots.” So it really looks like you’ll have certain objectives and have the ability to select the best man for the job.

The game seems to center around the reputation you’ll have in the crime community. In the very beginning of the trailer Dominick talks about what’s important to a mobster, Extortion, racketeering, blackmail, these are the tools of the mobster, without them, my reputation on the streets is worth nothing…” This must be some of the RPG elements EA is promising to bring to the famous movie franchise.

The Godfather II is set to debut this February.

Godfather II Screens for the Xbox 360 and PS3

Here are some screens from EA’s new Godfather II game for the PS3 and Xbox 360. As we reported earlier, EA talked to Variety about taking control over large portions of the city with a flick of a button. It seems like EA will be using broad-game elements to do so. I find it refreshing to see a new take on a different direction then the last Godfather game or for movie-based games as a whole. Just a warning, the screens are small.

New Godfather game in the Works, Will Also Have Online Battles

The Godfather game sold 4 million units on last generation of consoles and the remake on this generation, are good enough to warrant Electronic Arts to make the “Godfather 2” game. According to Variety, the game will still feature an open world element much like what Grand Theft Auto does. Just like the first game and movie, it’ll follow a new member of the Corlenone family who tries to rise through the ranks in crime.

Senior VP and GM of EA Nick Earl told Variety about the early concept of the game.

“We talked about it a lot and ended up focusing on the ’60s, because the flashbacks that are so great as a film experience don’t really work for a game. We’ve created our own story that weaves in and out with the film and hits its major touchpoints.”

The story will take place in three different cities: New York, Miami, and Havana. The game will feature the ability for the player to control their crime families from a “city-wide perspective“. In a world where almost every video game has some sort of online play, the Godfather II will be no different. The game will have an online multiplayer option, where the player will take control of his/her’s “crime family” while battling it out against a rival family through Xbox Live or Playstation Network. Unfortunately, no other details about playing online have been revealed.

It’s was also mentioned in the Variety article, that all the stars from the second film will be returning to their roles from the famous 70’s film. Excluding Al Pacino, who played the character Don Michael Corleone, decided not to take the role. But EA will have a replacement actor who sounds familiar to the legendary character.

Redwood Studios is the development team behind the game and they will hopefully create a better game then the first Godfather adaption. “Although the Xbox version of the game did receive decent reviews from critics with a 78% rating, according to gamerankings.com“. The Godfather series does have a lot of potential for a video game, hopefully the story can be improved on a next-gen console.

EA expects to ship the Godfather II in Febuary of 2009.
