BioShock 2 Multiplayer Footage

BioShock 2 multiplayer footage has made its way online today, and I embedded it up top. Since I heard that 2K Marin was planning on having some sort of online mode, I was curious to see what they had up their sleeve. In the first-person shooter genre, the original BioShock was actually revolutionary — in the sense it didn’t rely on big guns and explosions. It was a very subtle game, that focused more on the storytelling and atmosphere, unlike other first-person shooters. But that is what it made it work so well, and breath of fresh air.

Sadly, after seeing some of the multiplayer portion of the game, I think 2K Marin is taking the sequel in the wrong direction. I don’t think it is going to be a bad game by any means; however, it doesn’t have that feeling of uneasiness that the first installment did so well.

If you check out the video up top, it doesn’t look like the online action is going to define itself — like what the first game did for single player.

BioShock 2 Gets a Worldwide Release Date

bioshock2_16

A few months ago, Take-Two announced BioShock 2 would be delayed and not make its holiday season debut like the company originally thought. Many people suggested the launch date was pushed back because Take-Two didn’t want to compete with an already crowded shooter year, and mainly didn’t want to be a second title behind Activision’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.

While I was certainly disappointed that we won’t be able to play as a fearsome big daddy in 2009, I’m happy to report it won’t be that far into 2010 when we can. The publisher and 2K Marin have revealed the release date of BioShock 2 and will be in stores on February 9, 2010. Not only that, the companies expect the date to be a worldwide celebration of the second installment of the series and the whole globe will get it on the ninth.

Again, it’s great to know that we won’t see a major delay in the anticipated first-person shooter and we won’t have to wait well into 2010, like some rumors were suggesting.

This is What the Big Daddy You’ll Play as in BioShock 2

bigdaddy2

Up top is the final version of how the Big Daddy will look, when you play as him in BioShock 2. 2K Marin’s Colin Fix has posted the image on his personal blog and confirming this is how the main character is designed.

Although its not a huge surprise because we saw similar shots in various gaming magazines. However, seeing what he’s definitely going to look like, explains why this Big Daddy seems rather faster and more agile than the predecessors in the first BioShock. He’s no question smaller and looks more ‘human-like.’

Below is what the Big Sister, Big Daddy’s nemesis, will look like.

Take-Two: BioShock 2 Delayed Until “First Half” of 2010

bioshock2_17

Take-Two has just confirmed that BioShock 2 is going to be delayed until fiscal 2010. The company most likely made the move because they understand that the market is poor and because of that, probably won’t make as much money as they previously estimated. “We recognize that our revised outlook for the balance of fiscal year 2009, due to both internal and external factors, is a disappointment,” said Take-Two Chairman Strauss Zelnick. “That said, we concluded that moving the release of BioShock 2 into fiscal year 2010 was the right decision for the product. We believe the result will be a more compelling consumer experience and a better performing product in the marketplace.”

During a conference call earlier today, the company confirmed that the anticipated first-person shooter should be available in stores in the “first half” of 2010. Which means we might have to wait until June to get our hands on the game. Yeah, that is disappointing. Although thankfully, the company is also ensuring that the delay will help “emphasis on quality” and when BioShock 2 is out, it will deliver the best experience possible.

It looks like by lowering expectations for 2009, the company hopes the future is bright for 2010. Now with BioShock 2 coming out next year, Take-Two will have three potential blockbuster games for 2010 because Max Payne 3 and Mafia II is also expected to come out the same year. Although, it will be a rough Christmas for the publisher.

BioShock 2 Shipping Dates Revealed for North America and Europe

During a Take-Two financial conference call, Ben Feder who is the CEO, revealed the dates when BioShock 2 would be released in both North America and Europe. Europeans will be a receiving the game a tad early, which is rare for titles developed in America, and will ship on October 30. North American residences are expected to pick up the game a few days later on November 3, 2009.

As of now, Take-Two has yet to mention which systems the adventure first-person shooter will grace, but considering the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC sell games at a healthy rate, we should eventually see BioShock 2 on all three.

However, I do think we might see a timed-exclusive, much like we saw with the original BioShock. Judging the lineups for both the PS3 and Xbox 360, I think Microsoft would need BioShock 2, more so than Sony.

If anything like a timed-exclusive is confirmed, expect to hear it at E3.

The New Look of Big Daddy

GamePro Magazine has the first look of the new Big Daddy’s makeover, who is the star in the upcoming BioShock 2 game.

This version of Mr. B does not have the bulkiness to him, as the other ones did in the first game. Which now makes sense to me. The first couple of videos that were showing off gameplay of BioShock 2, this Big Daddy seemed to move much faster and was considerably more agile, than compared to the first ones we saw in the original game.

His helmet is also different. Instead of having the multiple glass ‘windows’ on the helmet, this Big Daddy has one large goggles in the center, much like an old scuba-diver would. This would also explain why the game doesn’t have little circles on the TV set. Remember, the game is a first-person shooter. This genre was made to represent how the main character sees, and if it were playing the role as an older Big Daddy, little viewing circles would cover the screen, rather than one single image.

After the jump, check out the full cover of the magazine. (more…)

More BioShock 2 Screens

Eurogamer France, has a bunch of screenshots for BioShock 2. We have snagged a few (or 4) to share with you guys. Although, if you want to see them all, make sure you head to their site.

What can I say, I’m more than excited to play the game and I think there is no question it has ‘Game of the Year‘ potential written all over it.

And oh, the picture above — does it look like the drill hurts enemies a tad?

Video: 9-Minute Walkthrough for BioShock 2

The original BioShock is easily one of the top five games that have come out this generation. It truly is a rare game where everything felt almost perfect. The story telling was top notch, the art deco style of the city was beautiful, the soundtrack captured the mood — just everything made it into a instant classic. So when I heard I’ll be visiting the city of Rapture once again in BioShock 2, calling me excited would be a huge understatement.

We already know the details of the next installment, like taking the role of a Big Daddy and fighting a much more agile opponent in the Big Sister. We have even seen screens and a quick video of the first person shooter/adventure game.

Now, straight from IGN we have a nine minute walk through for BioShock 2. As we watch what looks like the first minutes of the game, the director Jordan Thomas talks us through the video.

So far, I’m really digging the ability to walk on the ocean floor and what seems like short cuts around the infamous underwater city. Seeing the ocean floor with debris floating on the bottom gives off a fantastic effect and gives me a feeling of uneasiness.

I’m also loving the idea of being a Big Daddy in particular. Having the giant ass drill on the right side of the screen, makes me feel like I’ll be easily intimidating. I remember first playing the original BioShock and when I saw the Big Daddy for the very first time I thought; How in the world am I going to defeat that!? Now, I feel if the computer had feelings and emotions, it would be saying the same thing about me.

However, I do have one minor complaint so far and it’s about us playing as Mr B. I know it’s a video game and the pace of how one walks is extremely important, but I think this Big Daddy in BS 2 walks to fast to consistently. I know a Big Daddy could always charge at an enemy attacking him, but when he wasn’t fighting he was, well… rather slow. At times he seemed like walking was awkward for him. In BioShock 2, he moves just like his human counterpart. Oh well, again it’s only a minor complaint.

The last thing I would like to mention is how awesome the Big Sister is shaping up. Not only is she incredibly fast, but having her include the same ADAM abilities, should make for some epic battles.

After the jump, check out the nine-minute walk though. (more…)

Cool Stuff: Custom ‘Big Sister’ Sculpture From BioShock 2

BioShock 2 is months away, but that did not stop darthleaon_customs to sculpt his very own Big Sister. As you can tell from the picture, it is extremely detailed, but you should know — it’s less than 4 inches tall. Which even make it that much more impressive.

In order to make something like this, and have it look the way it does — someone would have to bestowed inside them some unbelievable talent.

So far, it is safe more me to say it is easily the best custom Big Sister figure I’ve seen yet. Of course, I pretty sure it is the only one I have come across thus far. Although, good luck to anyone who thinks they can outdo darthleaon_customs’ work.

After the jump, check out more pictures.

A Bunch of Screens for BioShock 2

2K has lifted the embargo date for BioShock 2′s screenshots, meaning the public can now view them. As you can tell, the newly formed 2K Marin has done an unbelievable job of recreating the dark and gritty atmosphere, which the original game did so well. In may respects, the new team could have surpassed 2K Boston — visually.

Although, the big question is if 2K Marin can excel in the gameplay department, which is something BioShock ’1′ did so well. The first installment not only was a fantastic first-person shooter, but one of the best games to come out this generation. So, seeing 2K Marin pass the original in that aspect, is well… a totally different story and we’ll just have to wait and see. But so far, it looks like they are headed in the right direction.

We have a bunch of shots after the jump. Remember to click on each one to see them enlarged. (more…)

Real-Life BioShock 2 Big Daddy Doll

A reader over at Kotaku has proved his love for BioShock. ‘Nathan’ loves it so much, he replicated a real-life Big Daddy doll from scratch, which was first featured in the teaser for BioShock 2 awhile back. As you can tell, it’s pretty damn accurate looking, and in a weird way, I wish I could have one.

Below is a screen capture from the teaser. Not bad, eh?

First Footage for BioShock 2

Most have been waiting for this moment for a long time, well at least me anyway. 2K has released actual footage for maybe their most anticipated game ever, BioShock 2. The clip above was from Gametrailers TV, which premiered on Spike TV. This is not a trailer, but just someone playing the first-person shooter, so we all get a sense of what to expect.

First, even though we are playing as a ‘Big Daddy,’ the game’s gritty feel and presentation looks very much like the original title, even with the giant ass drill taking up the right side of the screen. Some might be disappointed because of that, however, if it’s not broken — why fix it? Graphically, the title looks updated and the level we get to see, just seems crisper. From the water effects to the textures on the walls, Bioshock 2 is already looking technologically better.

The most exciting thing I noticed was how fast everything was moving. Not only is the big sister ridiculously quick, but all the enemies were running and are much more aggressive than the first game. At the same time, the amount of Splicers were astounding. If I had to criticizes one thing about the first Bioshock, it would have to be how many bad guys were on the screen at once — which wasn’t many. Although, I wouldn’t blame 2K for that, the Unreal 3 Engine always seemed to have that problem.

After watching it, I’m convinced this has game of the year potential written all over it.

GameTrailers TV Premiering Gameplay Footage for BioShock 2

The weekly show for GameTrailers TV on Spike is premiering its new time this Thursday at 12:30AM. Not only is it a new time, but the show looks to reveal footage for 2K’s BioShock 2 Sea of Dreams, for the first time. The show will also exclusively debut the Big Sister in action as she takes on the star of the game, a Big Daddy.

Not only that, Nintendo’s Reggie is set to announce a new feature that will be included for Punch-Out!! for the Wii. What could it be? Well, our guess is the confirmation of the Wii Balance Board working with the game. This is something that we thought would eventually be announced and has been rumored for sometime now. The show is also going to reveal a brand new trailer for the boxing game.

During the same episode, Sony is promised to speak about a “major announcement” for their exclusive hit Killzone 2. On top of that, the company is going to discuss the future of their popular first-person shooter.

Make sure you tune in this Thursday at 12:30 in the morning on Spike TV. However, if you miss it, make sure you come back to /gamer because we should have all the info for you.

Sea of Dreams Once Again Not Included in BioShock Name

Seriously 2K, how hard can this be? The first trailer we saw for BioShock 2, ended with the name including a subtitle; “Sea of Dreams,” below it. Then suddenly, some people noticed the name was dropped when Game Informer had a blowout for the first-person shooter in the magazine. Someone from 2K responded and said the subtitle was indeed dropped and would longer appear. We went on with our lives.

Out of nowhere, Eurogamer was reporting that whomever said the name was removed was incorrect. Again, we reported and went on with our lives. However, the name drama is back because apparently the name is not going to be present next to the logo. The news comes from a 2K spokesperson who spoke with IGN.

“We name most of our trailers at 2K and the name of the teaser trailer we released last October for BioShock 2 is called ‘Sea of Dreams. There was talk about adding that as an official subtitle, but we decided to simply keep it BioShock 2. We’re sorry for the confusion, but we’re glad people are so interested.”

The only confusion we had, looked to have come from 2K itself. So as long as everyone is now on the same page, we should never mess up this stupid issue again. And hopefully one day, we can go on with our lives without “Sea of Dreams,” disrupting it.

Sea of Dreams Back in the BioShock 2 Name (For Now)

Last week, 2K mentioned to a few sites that they were dropping the subtitle title “Sea of Dreams” for BioShock 2. Either someone screwed up, or the company suddenly had a change of heart. Because now, according to Eurogamer, “Sea of Dreams” will still be included in the title, which we prefer anyways. But at this point, we want 2K to either make up their damn minds or learn how to give out a memo the right way, because they are really starting to screw up my tags below.
