Battlestar’s Tricia Helfer in StarCraft II

helferYes Please

It was announced during a panel at BlizzCon that super hot Canadian-born actress Tricia Helfer, will be playing antagonist Sarah Kerrigan in StarCraft II. Helfer’s best work would obviously be her role in BattleStar Galactica, where she played the tempting Number Six Cylon.

This won’t be the first time Helfer will lend her voice in a videogame. Not too long ago, she was confirmed to be acting in the new Bungie title Halo: ODST. And she even starred in a couple other game titles which were: Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars and 2008’s Spider-Man: Web of Shadows.

With all that said, Tricia Helfer said she is still considers herself as “videogame virgin,” during the panel. Oddly enough, 73% of those attending BlizzCon are a different kind of virgin.

Trailer: Nintendo DS Version of Ghostbusters

Atari has just released the first trailer for the Nintendo DS installment of the Ghostbusters. The developer Zen Studios (Zen Pinball), looks like they took the Red Fly (Wii version) approach, which is the smart way of thinking.

Instead of trying to recreate the console version in the palm of your hand, the studio has completely changed not only the style, but the mechanics of the game. It looks more like a mini-RTS, than a shooter. The player manages the entire squad with one flick of the styles, and select characters on the fly by simply touching one of the Ghostbusters’ avatar on the right side of the screen.

Make sure you watch the video all the way to the end to see the baby Stay Puft Marshmallow Man. I call it a baby because he definitely isn’t the same scale from the film.

Awesome Pikmin Cupcakes

The website snackordie has created this delicious, yet creative looking Pikmin cupcake. The Pikmin sticking out of the cupcake is nothing more than a Fruit Roll-Up, which has been rolled into place to look like the head of one of the mini-creatures. The cupcake itself is a simple chocolate frosting version, but to add an effect, the chef placed cookie crumbs around the Roll-Up to make it seem like it was soil.

If you want to learn how to make your very own Pikmin cupcake for your next video game all-nighter, click here.

Edge Teaser Referring to Pikmin 3?

In the latest issue of Edge magazine, there was a teaser advertisement for the following month. The picture above is that ad. As you can tell, the tease is just showing a patch of grass with the words “Next month.” What could it be, and which games have to do with a lawn.

Some have been assuming it’s a teaser for the third installment of Pikmin, and I would have to agree. Apparently, if you look at the actual issue and not a scan, you can see what looks to be a purple Pikmin on the top-right-hand corner. Someone decided to scan just that, which we have below. Judging by it, I can definitely see the resemblance.

With next month bringing E3 and Miyamoto confirming on several occasions that Pikmin 3 is being developed for the Wii — it’s a pretty safe bet that this ad is for that game.

Halo Wars Sells Over 1 Million Units Worldwide

Microsoft announced today that Halo Wars has officially sold more than 1 Million copies worldwide, making it the best selling real-time strategy on today’s consoles. As of a matter of fact, we are going to guess and say its one of the best selling RTS games on a home system, period. Although, we don’t actual numbers to back this up — but considering what RTSs have come out for the consoles, it must be up in the top.

Microsoft wanted to gloat a little more and give out some interesting tidbits in a press release about the success of Halo Wars. For instance, there has been more than 2.6 million multiplayer games played online, which equals to about 118 years total time. That also equals to about 118 years of man work wasted that could have made the world a better place. But honestly, trying to create peace on earth is not nearly as fun as commending UNSC and Covenant troops, is it?

Halo Wars First Day Sales: 200,000

When Halo Wars was announced as an real-time-strategy, some gamers were wondering if the game could actually sell on a console. Sure, the game using the name of a popular franchise, but the genre is completely different. Would Halo fans want to replace the fast paced action with a slower type game, where the player had to think how to approach his enemies.

Well, the those questions have been answered, because Halo Wars has sold over 250,000 units on the first day in North America, according to a report. These numbers mean the game kept up with one of Sony’s biggest game of the year thus far, Killzone 2.

On a side note, Halo Wars did well in other countries as it did here. The Xbox 360 RTS sold about 200,000 copies outside America, helping the game reach 450,000 units sold. In the end, Halo Wars should sell over 2 million units worldwide when its all said and done.

Because of these latest figures, this will probably mean in the future we could see more RTS’s on home systems — a genre that has always been missing.

CES: Halo Wars Coming Out Next Month

Update: Microsoft has confirmed that the date announced last night for Halo Wars was a mistake. The original date is still March 3 and NOT February 28.

Microsoft had their 2009 CES keynote speech last night. During the briefing, Robbie Bach confirmed that the anticipated RTS game ‘Halo Wars‘ will be released in North America on February 28; three days earlier than previously thought for the Xbox 360. The company also revealed that a demo will be made available for Xbox Live subscribers on February 5, 2009.

During the same conference, Bach also assured the large crowd that Bungie’s Halo 3: ODST expansion will be out later this year. Although a specific date has yet to be announced.

We are looking forward to those two games, but we are a little nervous what Microsoft plans are for this year. As of now, they have yet to announce a major release title for 2009 — hopefully they have something up their sleeve for E3 because if they don’t; Sony has a great opportunity to play catch up.

Halo Wars Dated for Feb 27, Collector’s Edition Details Announced

In a press release today, Microsoft has confirmed that the RTS game Halo Wars for the Xbox 360 will be in stores on March 3, 2009 in North America. If people pre-order the game at their local video game retailer, they will receive an “exclusive in-game Warthog with flame decals”

Because the game is set in the ‘Halo universe,’ Microsoft obviously feels the need to have a ‘Limited Collector’s Edition‘ available on the same day. The LE will cost $20 more at $79.99 and include “Honor Guard” Wraith, graphic novel, six Leader cards and a “Spirt of Fire” patch. Owners of the collector’s edition will get early access to DLC for multiplayer.

Europeans will get the same packages, but the game is actually going to be available in stores a few days earlier on February 27, 2009.

Sega Reveals Genesis Collection Pack for Xbox and PS3

Sega has finally revealed the heavily rumored Genesis pack that will feature 40 games that were previously released on the old system. The retro game collection will not only include the original games like Sonic, Ecco and Shinobi, but will display them in 720p for anyone that owns an HDTV. Which is fantastic, because anyone who has played an old game on a ‘newer’ TV would know they look like crap.

Sega also announced the game will feature Xbox Achievements and PS3 Trophies — so it’s a must for any hardcore old-skool Sega lovers like myself. However, at this point, a price has yet to confirmed by the company — we just hope it’s not over $40 because if it is, it might not be worth it. We’re actually thinking it should be no more than $30, but we’ll see soon enough.

After the jump, check out the full list of games included with the collection. (more…)

5 Minutes of Gameplay for Halo Wars

Halo Wars 'Campaign' gameplay

Ensemble Studios, the team behind the real-time strategy game Halo Wars have released a five minute video showcasing gameplay from anticipated game. While watching the video above, the first thing I noticed was how the sounds were very similar to its first person shooter cousin. Later on, the voiceover which narrated the video, talked about how the sounds were essential for the team because it would remind the player they are still in the Halo universe. And I guess it worked.

While the game certainly looks fun, I think I would rather play it with a mouse and keyboard. But, because we obviously don’t have one for the 360 — I guess I have no choice but to use the 360 controller.

Microsoft expects the game to be released on January 21, 2009.

The Flood Officially in Halo Wars

Just like we already figured after the last Halo Wars cinematic video we posted a few days ago, the infamous Flood will be included in the upcoming RTS game for the Xbox 360. As of now we only know their in the game, but we have no clue if there going to be a ’selectable race.’

Of course, no Halo game would be complete without the annoying mutated aliens/people and like we said, the trailer already somewhat hinted at the possibility of the Flood running rampant in the game.

Video of the Backstory for Halo Wars

Thanks to Gametrailers and Microsoft, we now have a trailer for the backstory for the upcoming RTS game — Halo Wars for the Xbox 360. The movie is all pre-rendered video with absolutely no gameplay at all. But to be honest, that doesn’t bother us too much — the production of the video is just stunning and it almost makes us want to watch the CG story than actually play the game. Ok, I’m kinda kidding, but it sure does look good.

The trailer follows marines who, while cruising around space — discovered the Covenant is on a icy-planet and looking for something that, “could just be the key to the whole war.” What could it be? We’re not sure…

Pikmin Coming to the Wii…Not a Sequel, But the Original

I guess yay!? Pikmin is coming to the Wii this November in Japan. Even though this sounds like it should be unbelievable news, it really isn’t. It’s not because we hate Pikmin or anything like that — in fact, we feel the game was one of the best to come out last generation. We’re just kinda ‘blah’ about the announcement because it’s not a sequel — we’re getting a port of the original Pikmin that was released on Gamecube seven years ago. Heck, if Nintendo decided to give us a port of the RTS, couldn’t they given us the sequel, at least that version was better!

The game was announced during Nintendo’s fall conference in Japan. President Satoru Iwata also confirmed during the briefing, that this was going to be the first of a series of games to be released on the Wii, which made an appearance on the Gamecube. The other game to be released; Donkey Kong: Jungle Beat. Why? We have no clue! I guess Nintendo has truly ran out of ideas…

Info for the New Zelda and Pikmin for the Wii

A Latin American gaming magazine interviewed Miyamoto and Reggie from Nintendo. Even though the article didn’t go into much detail, they did discuss information about the next Zelda and Pikmin games for the Wii.

Miyamoto first talked about the next installment of the ‘Legend of Zelda.’ The godfather of games, promised that this time around it’ll be something unique because it was built from the ground up using the Wii in mind — unlike Twilight Princess. We’re assuming since it wasn’t originally intended for the Gamecube, it’ll take advantage of the Wiimote, and we assume MotionPlus too.

Miyamoto also talked about ‘Pikmin 3‘ for the Wii, and reconfirmed that it is in fact still making it’s way to Nintendo’s console. As of now and where the game is in terms of development, he’s happy with the build and seems excited about using the Wiimote for it. Considering the game moves like a RTS, we couldn’t imagine it playing worse than the Gamecube version. It should feel more natural this time around.

Because of the excitement surrounding the 2D game ‘Wario Land: Shake it,’ he was asked if by chance we would see the possibility of Mario or Metriod make a similar return in that fashion. Although Mr.M didn’t confirm anything, he did say couldn’t comment on that. We pray to the gods that, that answer means “yes.”

Reggie would go on in the interview that Nintendo never even discussed or even hint that a hard-drive would be a option for Wii owners. We pray to the gods again, that he really is lying…
