New Announcements for Sony’s Motion Controller Tomorrow?
According to a source over at VG247, Sony is set to hand out a press release regarding their anticipated motion controller tomorrow. Heavily rumored to be called Arc, the unit is expected to be ship with two separate components, much like how the Wiimote has the Nunchuck attachment; however, nothing has been considered solid evidence to prove this.
When the peripheral was first announced last June during E3, it was shown off as one unit. But now it seems as though Sony took the Nintendo route and believing it’s a necessity to have two units in order to play most games. Hopefully if all goes to plan, we should know everything about the peripheral this Tuesday night, around 5PM Pacific Time.
After the jump, check out my thoughts about the peripheral.
While I’m interested to see what this ‘magic wand’ can do, I’m not sold on the idea that Sony believes in it. Nor do I think the general public will be running up to their local videogame store and buying a PS3 because they want to use the motion controller, much like what happened in recent history with the Nintendo Wii.
By the end of the year, all three videogame hardware manufactures will have some sort of motion device for their console. Wii with the Wiimote, Microsoft with Project Natal and of course Sony with the ‘Arc.’ When Nintendo shipped the Wii, it was sort of a revolutionary change in the industry and it focused on one particular group — the demographic who would not typically buy a videogame console. However, I’m not sold on the idea they would go out and purchase another system — especially something that reminds them of a glorified Wii, for almost double the price.
Now we have Project Natal, and while it offers the moving-your-body feature to play a game — like the Wii — it does it differently. No longer does the player have to hold a controller. The device recognizes the player and his or hers gestures, then mimics them on the TV screen. It like an evolution in Nintendo’s concept of the Wii. It’s similar, yet so different, that I see people wanting to experiment with it. But does that mean they’ll go out and buy an Xbox 360? Maybe.
Now we have PlayStation 3’s ‘Arc.’ While I believe it’s certainly more advanced then the WiiMote — I don’t believe the technology offers a significant difference for people to justify purchasing a PlayStation 3; however, I possibly see Natal doing the complete opposite with the Xbox 360. On top of that, Sony has had a motionless controller for sometime now, in the Eye Toy. Obviously they dropped the marketing ball on that one…
