Real Info about Apple’s iSlate and its Gaming Aspect

Jason Calancanis, the founder of such websites as Joystiq and Engadget, has gone on his twitter and spilled the beans about Apple’s heavily rumored tablet PC. According to the entrepreneur, Apple asked him if he would go on television and talk about the importance of the tablet once its announced tomorrow, When he agreed to do the work, Apple sent over three guys, for security reasons, and dropped off the “iSlate,” the rumored named of the device.

Mr. Calancanis has already called the tablet the “greatest device ever,” and shared why he feels this way. Not only is the “iSlate” running off of what he calls an iPhone “flavor” OS, which is extremely easy to navigate to anyone who owns the phone, it will also include a HDTV with a DVR, so you can record television shows. It will be able to run multiple applications; so if you want to listen to Pandora and surf the web or play a game, you can.

But of course, this is a videogame site, and I’m sure you wanna know what kind of impact the device will have on this industry. So after the jump, read what to expect when the “iSlate” ships into stores.

First and foremost, the screen is perfect for gaming. The tablet won’t be using a standard a LCD screen, like most people originally thought, but feature the new technology of organic light emitting diode (OLED). This is great for gaming because of how deep the black levels should be, which in the end, help the graphics ‘pop-out’ more for the player. Not only that, the unit should be ridiculously thin, probably even thinner than most portable devices, including the iPhone. This could help make the device more attractive for people who want it for the go.

Calancanis briefly talked about some of the games on the “iSlate.” While it doesn’t sound like he played a whole lot, he did say it looks like “Nintendo Wii-Level innovation.” Although it was unclear if he meant the graphics look like the Wii, or the games play like the popular home console. Either way he felt gaming should make a huge impact on the device and even promised this will be one of the main features talked about at the unveiling tomorrow in San Francisco.

He even spoke about how games will enable WiFi and he believes LAN parties will make a comeback because of the device. He sees people, once again, playing first-person shooters together; however, I don’t believe that necessarily, because as along as you can play a game online, why would you do that? So, I don’t expect to see LAN parties making its return to the forefront anytime soon.

The downside of the gaming aspect with the tablet is the battery life. Once you logon to a game, the charge will only last up to 3-hours and the same time when connected to WiFi. Compared to some other gaming devices like the Nintendo DS, this would be considerably shorter; however, it isn’t that far off to how long the original PSP would last for. So I’m betting as time goes on, and another generation of tablets are released, they’ll improve this con greatly. However, lets say you are outside and you’re tablet ran out of power — have no fear because the sun is here. Not only can you charge the unit by using a AC adapter and/or computer, it will also include solar panels. Meaning, if you point to the sun, it will charge. Although, Calancanis said his device charged slowly using are closest star as power, and felt it was more of a gimmick than anything else.

Other peripherals the “iSlate” will have, are two cameras. Of course, one would think that would be just for the generic feature of taking pictures or maybe video conferencing, but I would love to believe gaming companies will take advantage of them too. I firmly think augmented gaming is a whole new genre that will soon take off. With having two cameras, the power of what the unit can do, and its portability — make the possibilities are endless. Videogame developers will use the cameras in someway, and if both a GPS and compass are included, you can bet your ass we are going to see some innovative titles on the way, I promise you that.

So far, only two games have been confirmed, thanks to Calancanis. Chess, which sounds like it is built in and Farmville. While Farmville doesn’t impress me at all because I’m just not into the social game, he promises the device will change the way the rest of the world plays the popular title. In fact, it sounds like social games will play an important part of the success of the “iSlate.” So much so, the CEO Mark Pincus, of Zynga, a social gaming studio, is expected to be on stage during the Apple press conference.

Some other quick features the unit will have is a fingerprint security system. So instead of unlocking the unit with a password system, the owner just needs to press his finger on the pad, and the system will automatically detect it. If you’re a Verizon customer and are interested in the unit, but worried it’ll only be available for AT&T like the iPhone, don’t be — Calananis confirmed Verizon AND AT&T will both carry the “iSlate.”

Overall, I’m excited about the product and how it will impact the very industry I love. I strongly believe Apple needs to start to focus more in the industry because quite honestly — I would love to see how they can innovate in the gaming world.
