Pachter Expects Modern Warfare 2 to Make $500 Million in First Week

We already know when Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is released in stores in just a few days, it’s going to be something special for the videogame industry. The big question everyone is wondering is; how many copies will the anticipated first-person shooter sell? If it does anywhere near what analyst Michael Pachter thinks, it’s going to be ridiculous.
According to Pachter, Modern Warfare 2 should hit the $500 million mark, by the time the game has been in stores for a week. Of course, I’m assuming he’s counting the special editions which some are priced as high as $150. Even though he probably is including the “Prestige Edition,” $500 million is an insane number for any form of entertainment to achieve in one week.
Pachter also added that Modern Warfare 2 should move at least 10 million copies by years end. At one point he thought it could even reach around 14 million units sold. If that ends up happening, the first-person shooter might be the biggest in the history of its genre. No question, it will easily be the best selling videogame of 2009 — and that’s saying something.

While talking to a few Gamestop managers, I’ve been told that some stores have over 600 reservations. There are even a few that already hit the 1000 pre-order mark, which means some of you who did reserve it are going to wait a long time before they get their hands on a copy at midnight. God Speed.
