Court Awards Family $16 Million for Deadly Wii Radio Stunt
You may recall a fatal radio stunt in which several contestants were competing to win a Nintendo Wii. This was back in 2007, months after the system debuted and when the Wii was still impossible to find in stores. Because of that, some people would have done anything just to get their hands on one and it gave KDND-FM of Sacramento, a immature contest idea; “Hold your Wee for a Wii.”
In order to win, the contestants had to chugged down huge amounts of water and the last one to urinate would be declared the winner and walk away with a Wii. The idea sounded harmless but unfortunately , the outcome proved otherwise.
Jennifer Strange (above), a mother of three kids; and they wanted the system at the time, died of water intoxication. The family felt the radio station was liable for Strange’s death and brought a lawsuit against KDND-FM. Today, a jury agreed with the Strange family and award them $16 million in damages.
Even though Jennifer was a willing participant, a tape during the trial was played. The recording proved that the station knew about the harmful effects of what drinking too much water could do. One of the on-air personalities even talked about the fatal consequences this stunt could turn into. He referred to a 2005 incident, where a person was hazed with a similar water intoxication stunt, which resulted with the person dying.
During the “Hold your Wee for a Wii” segment, it was revealed that even a caller warned the radio station about the harmful effects of the stunt and recommended they should cancel the contest entirely. Obviously, they went on with the stunt and after Jennifer was declared the second place winner, she ran into the bathroom to vomit. Soon after, she passed away.
