EA Confirms Small Team Working on Mirror’s Edge 2
Easily one of the more original concepts to come out in 2008 was EA’s Mirror’s Edge. While the title certainly displayed ground breaking gameplay by combining a first-person shooter with parkour style mechanics, it was met with decent but not great reviews. I personality thought some of the harsh critics out there didn’t give the game a fair chance. Some of the negative aspects I can agree with, especially with how short the action title was. Although, when I hear some people say they didn’t like it because the shooting portion of the game was imperfect.
That’s when I think they didn’t understand Mirror’s Edge. DICE, the studio behind the game, went into great lengths to discourage gamers not to use weapons. The company even gave out achievements/trophies to people who didn’t fire a single weapon as they beat the game.
With all this said, Mirror’s Edge didn’t sell well in the end. In fact the sales were rather disappointing for EA. Thankfully, that isn’t going to stop the publisher to green-light a sequel. According to EA Games Europe Senior Vice President Patrick Soderlund, a team is currently working on Mirror’s Edge 2.
“Mirror’s Edge was a risky move. It was a bold move, a very innovative and inspiring move. The game wasn’t perfect by any means. We would have liked the game to sell better even though the game has sold better than most people think. You will see another Mirror’s Edge for sure. It’s just a matter of when that time is and what we do with it. We have a small team on it and I’m excited about what we do.”
No other details were talked about, except the small team working on the title are members from DICE, which is good news in my opinion. Sadly, it doesn’t sound like we will see Mirror’s Edge 2 anytime soon, nor any other information. It seems like the studio is in the very early stages of development, but hopefully by next E3 we’ll know a little more.
