Reggie: The Wii Can “Win Over the Halo Audience”

Lets all face it, many Wii haters dislike the system because of its continue marketing towards the casual gamer. For the most part, it seems as though Nintendo has completely separated itself from the hardcore demographic. And E3 2008 certainly didn’t help with that perception, although 2009’s showing was a tad better.

With that said, Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime, spoke about the bad taste some gamers have received as of late with the Wii. According to him, the hardcore gamer will be switching over to the Wii this year, and when that happens — they will buy into games like Wii Fit Plus.

“We think we [can] win over the Halo audience with something like The Conduit, a multi-player, online, shooting experience, or Dead Space Extraction. And you know what? Once those people buy into Wii, they’ll go buy Mario Kart or Wii Fit Plus.”

First, I want to make sure all of you understand that I do not hate the Wii. But if Nintendo truly believes that ‘The Conduit‘ and/or Dead Space Extraction is going to win over the Halo audience, they’re going to be disappointed. I’m impressed with what High Voltage has done with The Conduit considering the limitations of the Wii’s hardware, but in order for the ‘Halo’ audience to switch games, The Conduit would have to be a superior game. And I’m sorry to say, I don’t see that happening.

While Dead Space Extraction looks like a decent ‘rail-shooter,’ in the end that’s all it is — a rail-shooter. I don’t expect people who play Halo to an extreme level, switching their beloved first-person shooter so they can play Dead Space Extraction, and have a limited gameplay experience.

And oh, there is no way in hell that these same people (as a whole) would go out and purchase Wii Fit Plus. Mario Kart maybe, but definitely not Wii Fit.

Come on Reggie, couldn’t you have answered the question with a more constructed B.S. reply?

  1. I agree, sure they might get some from Conduit, but Dead Space Extraction? Hah, no.

  2. Wii will NEVER win me over!!!!

  3. There’s too much crap-ware and just not nearly enough solid games on the Wii to compete with either the 360 or PS3. Nintendo’s 3rd party developers will continue to dump out cheap garbage titles that will continue to be bought by the Wii’s loyal army of ignorant soccer mom gamers. Nintendo’s not going to win anyone over with a single title like the Conduit.

  4. I have not really enjoyed a railshooter since Bayou Billy. I played the resident evil game, and while it may have been ok, I really felt it seriously lacking. If that’s what the Wii has to offer, then it looks like I’m not getting one.

  5. Ummm.. Reggie? I sold my Wii to a 40 yr old empty-nester for cost less than 6 months after the original purchase date. The only way you’ll get me back is if there’s a shortage in supply and I can make an addl. 25% re-selling a second one…

    Good luck though!

  6. I bought a wii and sold it.

Nintendo’s interests have aligned with a new market of video game players, they have painted that picture rather broadly. This is just to appease an already failing fan base.
