Details for Modern Warfare 2
Like we already thought, the June issue Game Informer has found its way into the mailboxes across the country for a few lucky subscribers. The big deal about this month, is that the magazine has the first details about the highly-anticipated first-person shooter Modern Warfare 2. Because some people have already received the publication, information about Infinity Ward’s new baby is starting to trickle down into the Internets.
After the jump, read what we know about Modern Warfare 2.
First, I’ll start off with the biggest disappointment. In a time where many shooters include co-op, the team behind MW 2 decided not to go into that direction. They felt adding the component would hurt the single-player portion. “We did a lot of co-op stuff early on that we were interested in, and it didn’t work with the story mode at all. It made a lot more sense here,” said Jason West of Infinity Ward, while speaking with GI.
While I find it sad they couldn’t figure out a way of adding the element, I guess if they truly felt it would hinder the experience of single-player mode, they made the right decision. However, the story might not be able to handle you and a buddy killing Russians, but it turns out that the company is adding cooperative missions. While it won’t follow a story, you’ll be able to select missions that were created for specifically online play. How many friends can join is still unknown.
Now, let us get to the good stuff. The FPS will run, according to the studio, at a cool 60 frames per second. While Call of Duty 4 ran the same amount of frames per second two years ago, Game Informer & Infinity Ward is promising that Modern Warfare 2 will be more detailed than ever before.
During the teaser a few days ago, we were shown snowmobiles plowing through an arctic wonderland. Like we thought, those same vehicles will be playable in the final version, however, the magazine did not mention if players can shoot and drive at the same time. My guess, since the trailer featured a gun as the snowmobile was driving on the snow — snow-by shooting will be included. We should also mention that Game Informer wasn’t the only magazine to receive some information about Modern Warfare 2, either. PSM3 reveals that that other vehicles like trucks and tanks will also be playable.
The game itself is described as a “wide-open”, where the player can explore anywhere he/she wants too. However, the story will still be linear. “The gameplay is a wide open and has a lot of variety,” Jason West explained. “In terms of the story… well, any good story is on rails.” He added.
Another feature added to the game, is the introduction to stealth in the series. While the Call of Duty series always felt like a real war going on inside your TV set — it was still a run-and-gun type game. With stealth, it seems like it will no longer take that approach. How exactly Infinity Ward plans on adding that particular ingredient to the mix is still not known. I’m at least hoping for some kind of cover-system, the best example I could give would be what Gears of War does, or even Rainbow Six Vegas. Sadly, I doubt that is what they mean by stealth.
During the promo trailer, we saw some units swimming in the water. Many thought including us, that somehow IW is going to implement swimming into the game. PSM3 is confirming that Modern Warfare is going to have the soldiers take the conflict into the ocean. How? Well again no one knows for sure…yet.
A full trailer is expected to debut on TNT during the NBA Playoffs on May 24th. As soon as it hits the airwaves, we’ll be putting it on /gamer. So, make sure to check back with us.
