Ready 2 Rumble Coming to the Wii — Why the Series has Always Been ‘Meh’

When Ready 2 Rumble debuted for the Dreamcast almost 10 years ago, people praised the game for its unbelievable graphics. While the game was certainly fun for its time, it was a tad basic and by no means deep. But many people excused the flaws because of how it looked.

At the time Midway released the title, it was obviously heavily influenced by Nintendo’s ‘Punch-Out!!’ series. Rumble had the same type of goofy cartoony boxers that ‘Punch-Out!!’ started years before. However, that is not the only reason why gamers consider Nintendo’s boxing game legendary. Sure it was cute, but it also had depth. It was up to the player to understand and learn the opponent’s consistent patterns. It took a lot of failing in order to beat the game. But at the time, that is what made it outstanding.

Ready 2 Rumble did the complete opposite. The game was 100% trying to appeal to gamers by its good graphics and cartoony characters. When we look back at it, the gameplay was not as important. The fighting system was more of a button masher with limited moves. Again, it wasn’t bad — it just doesn’t nearly hold up to the test of time like Punch-Out!!.

Apparently Atari own the rights to Ready 2 Rumble and has the talented team over at AKI (WWF Now Mercy) developing the boxing title for the Wii. If somehow AKI can mix the fun characters with good quality gameplay and utilize the Wiimote — this game could be fun. However, if Atari wants a quick buck than we should all just skip it.

In the end, I do trust AKI and if anyone knows how to make a deep fighting system; it would be them. After the Jump check out the second video.

Ready 2 Rumble: Revolution
