Prince of Persia: Animations Inspired By Creator’s Little Brother

Prince of Persia Animation Reference 1985 from jordan mechner on Vimeo.

Ok, this video is cool. When games were being made in the mid-1980s, technology was limited when developers were trying to program a game. Especially when creating animations, that’s why Super Mario and other games moved the way they did — stiff. Back in the day, companies couldn’t use technology that’s available today. Things like motion-capturing simply were not around for developers. So they had to use the next best thing that they had access too — their little brother.

When Prince of Persia was released in the ’80s, it was considered to be the best game when it came to movements and animations. Hell, to this day it still holds up. While in the early stages of the game, Prince of Persia creator Jordan Mechner was so obsessed with recreating real-life movements, he filmed his little brother to copy the exact motions and programed them in the game.

After viewing the long lost tape for the first time, we can say he successfully accomplished his goal. If we viewed this video without knowing which game it was supposed to be — we would have guessed which one it was correctly. The big giveaway is when his brother jumped over the walkway, that was perfect!
