Hands-On the Time Trial Mode for Mirror’s Edge — Plus New Screens

We were lucky enough to attended an event for EA’s FPS/platformer Mirror’s Edge for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Not only did we get to mingle with the developers of the project, we had a chance to check out the time trial portion — which will be made available through a demo if you pre-order it next month.

If you haven’t read much into DICE’s next ambitious project, then let’s get you up to speed. The story follows a female lead named ‘Faith,’ and in the not so decent future her government has controlled its people from thinking on its own — by brainwashing them. Not in a literal sense, but putting fear in the population and telling them the government is their to protect them from outside evil. It’s obvious the story is heavily influenced by the book “1984,” and maybe even taken from current events from around the world.

Because of the control and not let its people become free-thinkers, Faith has joined an underground organization — its goal is to get rid of its corrupt government. While Faith is the star of the game, she isn’t a leader or any ‘higher-up’ in the organization. She is nothing more than a runner, a person whose sends messages to others. The group of people she works for decided to create the runners because they realized if they use technology to relay messages, the government could easily wiretap them. So they rely on mouth to mouth communication and that’s where Faith comes in.

While the story certainly seems interesting enough to play, we were stuck playing the time trail mode a few days ago. The mode is exactly how it sounds, go through each level as fast as you can. In order to get the fastest time, you’ll be playing the level over and over, learning each corner, railing and wall. Sometimes you’ll make Faith Jump over a railing. Other times you’ll make her slide underneath one or maybe she’ll just climb a pillar to get on the other side, it’s all about what you think is the quickest route. While some people might get annoyed by playing a level over and over, others like me — will enjoy the hell out of it. This game owns the phrase “Practice Makes Perfect,” and boy is it addicting.

If you can’t figure out why your time sucks, the game offers you to download a ghost (first picture up top) through PSN or Xbox Live. The point is to see how other gamers accomplished their high score. As you’re running through the game, you’ll see exactly what the best player in the world has done or even how your friends got their time. You can try to mimic his/her every move.

If you watched the videos of the game and thought to yourself it looks way to complicated, trust us, it’s easy — a none gamer could pick up on the controls in a jiffy. You control the game like any other FPS using the analog sticks, but to climb or jump you use the L1(LB for Xbox) and to slide or roll after the jump, you simply press L2(LT for Xbox). The best way to remember the layout is to think anytime you jump hit the top bottom on the back of the controller. But if you want to go down to the ground, hit the bottom button…pretty simple stuff. The same can be said about the fighting system, even though there is not any enemies in the time trial mode, from what we understand, to punch you use the R1, but to kick hit the R2 button.

Because of the simplicity of the controls but yet it seems like you’re doing complicated stunts in the game, most gamers should find the experience incredible. If you don’t believe us, head down to pre-order the game, get the free code so you can try out the time trail yourself, trust us — you’ll be hooked!

Below, check out some new screens of the game.
