Cool Stuff: N64 Handheld Unit

Hailrazer on the benheck forums worked on and completed a portable Nintendo 64. He named his modded handheld the Darth 64 because it reminded his kids of Darth Vader’s helmet. Strangely if you look at the picture above, you can kind of see the resemblance.

He attached the the N64 motherboard using plastic stand-offs with “Abs cemented and epoxied in.’

He promises that if you drop or shake it, nothing will come loose nor will it break. Here is a list of the features that he wrote:

Psone screen with original backlight.
Flush mounted headphone jack.
5000maH Li-Poly batteries with quick charger and protection circuit.
Gamecube style joystick and d-pad.
Rear shoulder buttons and twin z buttons.
Cart slot relocation.

The total cost of his ‘invention’ — $240.

After the jump, check out more info and pictures of his project.

This is the case that he used, it looks to be some electronic toy for children. He found it at a flee market. The Xbox case next to it shows the size of his system.

This the toy being stripped, you can tell that he started to add the borders of the screen and where the controllers would be.

The ‘rear buttons’ were from the first Playstation Dual Shock controller.

Here is the final case for the front of the handheld.

Here is both ends separated and the wires connected.

He even included a power jack, along with a headphone jack.

The unit also has a on and off switch.

  2. That is fantastic, very nice work. If it were legal he could sell a gazillion of these.

  3. it is legal

  4. it is legal but would be very difficult to sell many, since it depends on used hardware, and there would never be a market for enough of htem to mass produce it, DS has better graphics for small screen size. so just hope yoru fav game gets ported
