Star Wars: The Force Unleashed Reviews Start to Come Out

The first couple of review scores for Star Wars: the Force Unleashed have made it’s way onto the interwebs thanks to gamerankings.com and forums. Official Xbox Magazine gave a score of a 7.5/10, calling it an “Entertaining story,” but “Is less polished than the Jedia Knight game.” The US version of the Official PlayStation Magazine gave a little lower score at 3.5/5. At this time, we couldn’t find an article for OPM.

The Nintendo Power review also gave it a 7.5/10 saying, “You can hack and slash with your lightsaber, which isn’t as satisfying as I’d hoped.” Isn’t that the only reason why we would buy that version?

Although the scores are more positive than negative, it is disappointing to see such an average score from a game we are excited to play. We still feel the game will have an unbelievable story-line and it could be worth purchasing just for that, even if the gameplay is not up to par as some others.

  1. I’ve played the demo several times and I’m very stoked

  2. hello,i´ve been waitng for this game since last year and i was a litle scared about it´s game play´s dificulty and let me tell you this:in the demo it rules!!! it´s easy to control our man ,the powers are awsome and beautiful to watch, really!!!i was excited before, now i just cant wait!!!

  3. I thought the demo on the PS3 was great, definately one of the better games I’m looking forward to actually getting.

  4. Played the demo, it’s good, not brilliant. It still has nothing on the Jedi Knight games for the PC. I don’t know why they don’t just bring another one of those games out but stick it on the consoles too. I’m pretty sure it would work seen as they brought out Jedi Knight II for the Gamecube and Xbox. It’s pretty ridiculous that considering the standard of technology that we have now, and they still can’t better a 6 year old game.

  5. After the playing the demo I was a little bit let down. I think the game designers were so enamored with that technology that lets the stormtroopers hang onto ledges before they die that they forgot about everything else.

In some ways the game feels like it is way too heavily designed around the force grab, which is quite fun to use if not a little confusing with the two sticks controlling the two planes of movement. But force throwing random boxes of explosives at packs of stormtroopers gets tired. It feels kind of cool to grab the TIE fighters in the hanger and smash some people with ‘em, but then at the same time you feel overpowered and why bother.

I personally loved the Obi-Wan game for the XBOX…not necessarily the crappy voice acting, but the saber control was good fun. By comparison the one button saber combat in SW: TFU is reminiscent of Assassin’s Creed and it’s one button sword fighting, which isn’t a good thing.

  6. Force Unleashed is garbage! Too Human provides more dynamics and depth to a gaming environment then this hollow shell of a Star Wars product.

While the graphics in Force Unleashed look good it’s about the only thing note worthy, but how can you fail at art when there’s 30 years of source material at your disposal?

What lacks is game play. As you level up you recieve a new abillity although you have no distinction between your levels nor the abillity to guide your path for a custom adept of the dark powers of the force. The inconsistency in the game play from it’s design is quite interesting - even though Lucas Arts fired almost the entire staff working on the game prior to it being completed.

This game proves Lucas Arts believes their target audience aren’t anything more then mouthbreathing illiterates who live on microwavable TV dinners. There’s no thought proviking experiances to the game play and it’s quite apparent in the extremely short demo.

Go play Too Human if you’re looking for a solid melee combat system with intensity and plethora of dynmics in your character creation, unless thinking about the path of your character is too hard…

Force Unleashed was great in concept although designed as an arcade game with less depth. Go play the 2 and a half minute demo, I dare you to play it twice.

Besides my take on this game, I am a huge Star Wars fan.

p.s. The Voice Overs for Darth Vader sound like a cafinenated teenager using a voice modulator - very pathetic.

  7. I think this game has extremely high expectations and because of that, some people will be let down when those expectations aren’t met. The demo was enjoyable but there were definitely some game play issues…perhaps it gets better once the character is upgraded?

  8. hahah mindspat; Too human is one of the worst games this year. The gameplay is horrible! so is the combatsystem.

  9. lmfao. Too Human will prob go down in history as 1 of BEST let down games. that game looked so cool in the trailers, but i guess the gameplay is just to horrible to play. 360 can keep this game exclusive for a game like that would only be an utter discrace to have on PS3…much like Overlord:Raising Hell was…

  10. Having played about half of SW:TFU, and “completing” Too Human earlier today (which was a chore, having to wait for a buddy to log on to down bosses is NOT cool *and please dont say roll another class because thats stupid*) I have come to terms with how gaming is going to be over the next few years. Activision is the only company out there doing good, unique, compelling games. Sillicon Knights should be scrapped, and Lucas Arts should be shut down.

SW:TFU tried to have an epic, compelling story but it ends up falling flat on its face with cheesy “OMG IM A LAWL CAT” moments that make me hate George.(please retire). If you have seen the new Clone Wars movie, and were not dissapointed, than you will not be dissapointed with The Force Unleashed. I have to agree with the comment stating the demo felt too leashed too the Force Grab. As you continue playing the game, it is literally used 99% of the time to just progress. (speaking of which if you dont watch the cut scenes i’d like to argue that this game is short too a silly degree. 2, maybe three hours max if you simply eradicate the enemies instead of playing with them.)

But please, don’t ever say Too Human is a good, or original game. Hellgate:London was much better than Too Human, (and it was a terrible game!) but because console fanboys waste so much money on their precious systems, PC’s have become “to expensive.”

Doesnt make much sense tho, xbox + 2 controllers + hdmi hook up + HD TV upgrade + game + headset + Live! account = more than a gaming rig.

  11. This game is awesome, i played the demo and was more than satisfied. Too Human is awesome too by the way, people who say it is not are just stupid followers.

  12. I played the demo via my PS3 and it was better than most action games for gameplay.

For someone like me the game is purchase worthy (just not now due to other priorities for me personally)

  13. I stand with my Too Human is “better then Force Unleashed” comment regardless of issues with the game. The dynamics alone establish TH as a good dungeon crawler; Enough of the Valkrie cut scene!

In regards to the combat sytem for Too Human, it’s exactly what I’ve been looking for in a console game. Too Human’s combat system is leaps and bounds (pun intended) above the likes of games such as Force Unleashed, Ninja Gaiden 2 (which I cannot stand) and Devil May Cry 4. If you think TH’s combat mechanics are inferior then I challenge you to actually engage it and learn the capacity of what’s available, it’s at least a quality rental.

All in all, Too Human is still adequately rated at a 7.0-7.5 when it had much more potential; May Odin damn the camera repositioning!

In *my* opinion, both Bioshock and Gears of War are less fun then Too Human even though they are vastly more polished. I base this on replayability and the dynamics of creating your characters.

I had wanted to give Hellgate a try when they released their big revamp that was coming although it’s quite unclear now. Obviously, MMO’s are an entirely different deamon and let’s hope console developers avoid the rush to releash strategy currently being witnessed on PC games.

  14. MINDSPAT you just said Too Human is better than those amazing and much more fun games. FU is an average game nothing that new but fun. Though it still deserves a better score than TH.

  15. hehe, too humans combat system is mediocre at best, Force unleashed was just not as great as it should of been, as games go Too Human accomplishes more but is a boring game to play, in reference to Too humans combat being better than Devil May Cry, common kidda dont talk drunk, Devil May Cry has probably the single best and most in depth combat systems to have ever graced the gaming world.

Also to the other guy who said somthing about Gears and Bioshock being ‘less’ fun, of the say 90 people on my friends lists people are still playing both of them games more in comparison to TH which i have played and now traded.

  16. I am playing TFU at the moment, and while it is a little bit of a let down, I really didn’t expect too much out of it. My expectations are always high, and I really never expect any game to hit them. Just take the game for what it is, and play the hell out of it. If you don’t wanna play it, then don’t play it. That’s what demo’s are for…to see if you will like the game or not. I just needed something else to play for a while until Gears 2 comes out, and Call of Duty 4 is starting to get a little old for me, but still a great game itself. I am a huge Star Wars fan, so I would have probably bought the game no matter how much it sucked.

  17. Ok so I got the game and beat it in 6 hours. Huh? This game was not worth $10 and hour! WTF Lucasarts?!?!?! Yes it was fun while it lasted but it has some major things that should have been looked more carefully during the production of this short game. First off, a level up system? Why not a system where you just learn new abilities and such while you play the game? The level up thing not only has very few options but also limited upgrades. Terrible. Also, this was not supposed to be a hack and slash!!!!!

On the positive side, the game looked great! The dialog scenes where even better than Mass Effect. Coolness. But online anything would have been nice, you know, to keep the going! You can’t expect a lot of people to take advantage of the -keep everything you aquired last play threw for the the next play threw- for the new game. It was easy the first time and it’s going to be too easy the second time! You can’t imagine my dissapointment when the Red Bull hadn’t even kicked in and the game was already over… Thumbs down. RENT IT.

    Just my opinion.

  18. ive beat the game and all this 7.5 bullshit blows it deserves a 9.5 and the reason not a 10 is because of how short it is

  19. I bought the game and enjoyed it for the most part. But those at lucas got lazy. the levels were too short and easily beatable. the graphics kicked major ass but the game is not really all that re-playable. I wish they would have done like they did Knights of the Old Republic I and II. Then the game would have been much more enjoyable.
