Cool Stuff: Scott Campbell’s New i am 8-bit Art, and Flyers
Scott Campbell is one of the more famous artist from the i am 8-bit show. For those who are unfamiliar with the gathering, it has become an annual exhibition held in Los Angeles with an art gallery geared towards retro gaming. Tomorrow marks the forth year of the shows existence and Mr.Campbell gave us a preview of what he’s showing.
Check out the first pic up top. It’s labeled; ‘Great Showdowns (of the 8-bit era)’. Their very simple, yet very creative pictures of old video game stars, but looking right at their video game counter-parts, that made their battles so epic when we were growing up. My personal favorites are the ‘frogger staring at the log,’ the ‘double dragon kick,’ and my absolutely favorite one; ‘Tetris looking where the next piece should fit‘. Click on it to see a larger version.
After the break, you can see more of his art.
If you bought the documentary ‘King of Kong‘ on DVD, you might recognize the next picture. When you opened up the case, this was inside the outside cover filling the whole DVD case. I remember the first time I saw it, I stared at the picture for maybe twenty-minutes to take it all in. I just loved how he captured the feel of the 80’s but in a simplistic way, with TONS of personality.
One of the cooler things that Scott Campbell did was create individual pictures that look very similar to the arcade drawing above. But made it like it was old instructions so you could cut it out, fold it together, and make a diorama.
This one obviously is paying a homage to the cult movie/game TRON. Instead of calling it by the original name, he called it TRAWN.
The next arcade is a game called ‘Rich People‘. Although I find it humorous, I’ve have no clue what or if – there is a parody behind it. I do however love the sides of the arcade. Doesn’t it remind you of an old corny drawing that used to attract people to waste countless quarters on a meh game?
Man look at those shorts this guy is wearing. And that stash that he’s showing off on his face. The guy looks exactly like one of my best friend’s dad growing up. God, is that creepy. It really captures the retro days.
Eating Man, I wonder what this is representing? Al right, I’m kidding. It’s paying tribute to the most revered arcade game of the 80’s – Pac-Man. I’m sure Campbell made the pizza flying into his mouth not a coincidence. The shape of Pac-Man actually came from the creator of the game-Toru Iwatani, while he was eating a pizza. When he took the first slice he looked down, and that’s how we have the shape of one of the most famous video game characters in history.
And here is the very last one. Yup, he cut them out, folded them, and made a diorama. Awesome huh?
