John Carmack Believes the iPhone Will Not Kill the DS
John Carmack (creator of the Doom franchise) was quoted on saying why he feels iPhone will not “kill” the Nintendo DS, just days after he spoke that the same phone is just as powerful as the PS2 and Xbox.
“I think the iPhone is a potentially extremely important platform for a lot of reasons, and I think it could be the type of thing that really makes inroads into…does it kill the PSP. There are structural reasons why it’s not going to kill the DS in there, but it certainly should be in there in the running there as a device that you can get modern, quality games for something, and I think it’s a great platform for content and new talent on there.”
Although, I do agree with him right now that the phone won’t over take the DS as the system of choice for portable gaming. I do believe at one point, that our cell phones could become our portable gaming system. The iPhone was not created for games in mind, it was more of an after thought. But if the games on Apple’s app store succeed (and so far are doing great), and really become a money maker for developers. We’ll definitely see a lot more companies focusing on Apple’s phone. Not only does the device have the potential of creating great looking games with unlimited control-because of the touch screen and accelerator. Every game to purchase is just a touch away to downloaded. No more packaging and games will never be sold out. It’s only a matter of time when publishers realize this.
